Fished from 8-12 at most of my spots and pulled in mayby 8 fish. Decided to try a mid lake hump once more before calling it a day. Looked around with out seeing much. Then saw a bunch fish suspended on the southern edge of the hump. I figured out that we needed to start casting back across the hump and using the Dennis Christian ( prob got name wrong. Apologies) retrieval method. We managed to boat about 50 before we had to call it a day do to other commitments. The fish where holding on the hump but moving to much for the vertical slabbing method to work.

Nice going Karl, I wish I had thought of that yesterday. I did notice on the Vine they seemed to be moving alot, and that the majority of my hits and catches seemed to be more of them attacking the bait trying to kill it, and not really eating it. Had a bunch come upbuttoned right at the boat.

When fish are moving, when does the vertical approach work? When they find right depth , right structure ie hump, thermocline, or temp ? Pls. chime in! Or is it all about finding bait and how the bait reacts to temp and forage food, plankton ?

Gborg I will get hammered for this statement but I vertical jig nearly all the time. I just think I catch a lot more fish that way. I will throw a top water if they are surfacing and it is not a big boat show. But I will gererally get at the edge of the surfacing action and and vertical jig and catch more and bigger fish than the people that are up in them.Using your electronics. Back to your orginal question when fish are moving when does vertical approach work.Fish are moving most of the time. Right now they are flying a 100 mph. How I work, say a ridge that see good marks on and they are gone. I throw out a buoy. Move along the ridge and you will probally see them again. Throw out another buoy. Sometimes I will throw out 4 or 5 buoys. Many times your bouys will line up with the ridge. Anchor on the ridge or push anchor lock and watch how every 5 minutes they come under your boat. The pattern they are on right now is flying a 100 mph. When I see great marks mark spot and drop down will catch a double most of the time and they are gone. Stay put using the theory that that are on their route and will be back shortly. The only reason I cast is when I get lazy and don't won't to look for fish. So the answer to your question is when does vertical jigging work when fish are moving. I say all the time. although nothing works all the time. Now let the hammering begin because a lot people will say you have to cast to catch fish. Johnny

Well Johnny we all now that it takes to much engery to cast and retrieve for you so we know you set in you seat and drop stright down Heck if you could put it the floor of the boat I think you would do that once again engery to lift over the side of the boat espeicially the V hull.LOLOLOLOLOL
ALl kidding aside Johnny you are right the stop lock and drop is the best to boat fish, and LEARN HOW TO READ AND TRUST YOUR ELECTRONICS!!! thats what Johnny PREACHES For the casting if to see if the are bigger one out side the school then cast and retrieve I will do that at times I did yeaterday while they were catching at the boat I casted bout 30 feet out and was catching nice keepers.
I will say one thing if you dont hire Johnny for a trip and fish and learn. Then I suggest you READ and listen to what he says and post. Because I know that he is not gonna tell you something if he has'nt done it and it works.

Just to clarify, the fish where not surfacing. I decided to change my presentation when I noticed on my graph they where suspended from 10' down to 5' off the bottom. I vertically slab 95% off the time. But after having a slow morning, I tried something and it worked.
I can tell you Johnny's method works, seen it to many times. I just have trouble duplicating. Defiantly, book a teaching trip w/ him. He is the man of the lake!

Dang Frank your on the pay pal plan? Lol Way to go Karl. Way to figure out want they want today. I have always thought that it is more of how you do it not what you do it with. That type of retrieve works with slabs and other lures as well. A salty old guide told me once that its not the jig... its the jigger. I thank he is correct. My son and I caught over 100 yesterday between 9:30 am and 11:30 am. All on Ole Uglies in 16 feet of water in between two saddle humps. Lots of doubles.
