Paying half the expenses is a great deal for a back seater. Common sense tells anyone that. Helping out any other way one can is appreciated too.

I have a co worker that has a boat but something is always wrong with it plus it's only 16 ft long. We only use his to fish a river that runs though town that's two miles long. He doesn't clean it and we are lucky it starts but don't really need big motor to fish. Anyways mines newer I keep it clean and check everything to make sure it starts b4 I leave the house. We use mine when we go to the lake. Most of the time he gives money but not all the time and he never helps clean it or truck after long trip to falcon. He keeps saying he's going to get bigger boat cause I keep telling him it's his turn to do all the driving and figuring out where to fish and let me relax and just fish. He makes more money than I do and don't have wife or kids. So I call [censored] I think he would just rather bum of me. So now when he calls and ask about going fishing I do what the bass do I shut down.

I started out as a backseater and now have a boat I can use whenever I can...but when my buddy and I go out and take his boat, I will generally tow it for him...my gas...he puts gas in the boat...if we go in my boat, he tows it with his truck and I put gas in my boat...we generally swap off buying food and stuff for each other...works very well

"Please note, a hero, Soldier, Police, or Fireman, always go at my cost, I will provide all for him/her and family within reason (burgers, hot dogs and iced water and sodas)."
....You couldn't have said it better! I have a flat bottom that I am waiting on a power pack to be shipped before I can get it back in the skinny water, and a Contender race tunnel hull that no one in their right mind would want to ride in! Been fishing with a good friend that lives just down the road from me and always either pay for a tank of gas when we go out OR show up with two or three gas cans to add to the tank. if on the rare occasion we buy some live shrimp to drift at the North Jetties I will pay for that.
This weekend I will be picking up my Skeeter 22BAYT and am wondering how many of my buds will see it in the driveway and all of the sudden want to head out!
.....REMEMBER, there are other forms of "PotLickers" than the ones that run full bore onto your drift when you are catching fish!!

I am a back seater and met this guy through my wife. I was lucky enough that he invited me on his fishing trip. I told him I would help him pay for gas and buy the beer. he never accepted any gas money, but I always insisted on buying drinks and ice. I don't usually eat on a boat so I don't offer food unless we do an all day trip. Since I know he won't accept gas money, I try to help here and there. I bought him a cast net and returned whatever lures I borrowed and lost on a snag. I always help him clean up his boat afterwards and do the little things like dropping or pulling up the trolling motor. We are good fishing buddies now and go out to the lake with him almost every week. Think I will get him replacement blades for his filet knife since he always filets my fish. He has the boat on a slip so he doesn't have to tow the truck.

I'm a backseat hitchhiker and I always offer gas money (Not always taken but offered), I pay for minnows and because I make crappie lures they all get their jigs free. I owned a boat and I know the costs of taking a boat to the lake... Common sense tells me it's the right thing to do...

Have you even bother to ask him for any help or going halfs? I have never asked my buddy's for anything since I always invited them. If you never lay down the rules how is he suppose to know. Ask, the most he can say is no.

It costs me about the same whether I go alone or bring someone. I may ask them to pick up a bag of ice for the cooler.
I went on a long trip once with a dude who insisted I pay more than half due to the "wear and tear" on his vehicle. Never again.
Besides I need someone to throw to the sharks so I can escape.
Wishin' I was fishin', and dreaming of beer

.....took a friend of mine from San Leon out the other day with a vacationer that was staying on the West End. Young guy was from Jersey and just wanted to go fishing. He bought the live shrimp and croakers and some liquid refreshments on his own while I was putting the Skeeter in the water. I put us on some very decent fish and took care of lunch when we had to run into Moses Lake during a rain squall at The Fish Spot. Headed back out and let him see six big Drum that were next to the boat in the 40-60lb class that showed up. (I had never seen that before!!). We kept catching specks until we were hit by another squall line. We got back in and he layed $40 on my truck console without me even knowing!
....no THAT is some backseat etiquette! I'll never bad mouth "Jersey" again.
