My family had a place there for many years and we used to do alot of fish in a few ponds they have around there. But we are going back at the end of july and i had never tried fly fishing there. I was wondering if anyone has been there fly fish or around Durango that could let me know where would be the best place to try. I will be willing to drive a little bit but not to far.
Thanks Drew

I also lived in Durango 30+ years ago.( Hermosa actually) I always had good luck fishing on Hermosa creek. I don't know if there is public access to it any more, I understand that things have changed a lot since I lived there. I also had good luck fishing on Emerald Lake, but it is a 10 mile hike above and behind Vallecito Reservoir. On Missionary Ridge there is Henderson Lake which I have caught many nice fish on. And if you drive North on 550 towards Silverton there is Holland Lake. Holland may be a bit crowded as it has the easiest access but it is a nice lake. Just be careful of the ticks around Holland Lake, I got tick fever up there 40 years ago.
I am surprised to hear that Duranglers is still around, That is where I used to stock up on tackle at their shop in the early 80's. It was a really nice shop back then.

I have guided/worked in the Durango area for the San Juan Angler. There is a lot of small stream in the area and you are within easy reach of the San Juan below Navajo. There is still good access to Hermosa Creek as well as Lime and Cascade. The Animas in town can fish very well but can be fickle. Take a 3wt and 5wt any you will be covered.

The largest brown trout I ever landed was just North of the 32 St bridge. We would park in the City Market parking lot and walk down to the river. I caught it using a spinning rod with salmon eggs for bait. The fish broke my rod and I ended up going into the river after him. After fighting him all the way under the bridge I was finally able to land him and me on the Southwest side of the bridge directly behind City Market. That was one of the most memorable fishing experiences I ever had. I don't remember exactly how large he was ( that was 35 years ago) but he made dinner for my Mother, my Father, my girlfriend and myself. There was also enough leftover that I finished him off for breakfast the next morning.
Ahh the good old days.
