I like the feel of a medium rod cranking shallow, I lost too many fish on a medium heavy.

Check out the Falcon Cara CLC-4-17 Composite Cranker its great for sqaurebills. Plenty of backbone with the right tip action.

Medium heavy. I use the Dobyns Champion 705 CB Glass for square bills and I don't feel I've ever lost a fish because of the extra backbone in the rod. Comes in handy with bigger fish though.

Med action for me. I have seen to many come unbuttoned because the rod had to much backbone and pull the bait away from the fish or rip it out of there mouth.

Depends on the size of the squarebill. For the 1 to 2 sizes I use a medium. I prefer a med hvy for the 2.5s and larger.
You know the old saying
If it floats, flys, or f___s it is always cheaper to rent!
You have to decide which is more important.

It depends on the maker, I have 4 rods I will throw them on 3 are medium fast, 1 is moderate fast. The st croix feels like some of my mh stuff, the looms is moderate fast and is like a wet noodle, the crucial is medium fast and is the softest of all of them, the all-star asr is medium fast and is just a little softer than the st criox. I grab the all star more than the rest of them put together.

Medium with braided line Medium heavy with all other lines.
