imho if you take the time to learn how to use the sidescan effectively then yes it is 1000x worth it if you dont take the time to understand and learn exactly what your looking at then no its not
so basically it all depends on your willingness to learn the capabilities of it IMHO
fish to live and live to fish

Down scan is looking under the boat, but much higher definition than your 2D sonar. Side scan looks to the side of the boat and can map stuff your down scan or 2D sonar would have never seen without multiple boat passes to cover the area. Side scan saves you time, down scan puts fish in the boat, IMHO.

You know how when you graph over a deep water spot, and you say man i must have missed the sweet spot. You dont miss the sweet spot when you are looking 100' each direction.

Lowrance HDS has side scan and down imaging. Not sure about the Birds but they probably do too.

It would be awesome to have $1000 side imaging on my $500 boat. Kinda like a $50000 boat or car in front of a $40000 house

Yes, they will do both if you buy a unit that describes it as having it. For Lowrance you need the LSS-1 or or LSS-2 unit. With Humminbird you need one also described with having both but you don't need an external unit like the Lowrance.
Electronics with side and down scanning are only as good as the person using it. I've seen a lot of people put out the big bucks to buy them but never spend the time to find out how to use them. I'm talking about pros too. I've heard that less than 50% of the pros actually know how to use them well.
