This is a trophy Rio Grand Cichlid caught on the Llano River in Central Texas. Some days, you just have to fish with wooden rods.

A chunk of Cichlid, as it were. Are they native to the Llano or introduced?

A chunk of Cichlid, as it were. Are they native to the Llano or introduced? These are native to most of the hill country drainage-all the way up to Brushy creek north of Austin. I think you might find the in the san gabriel as well. By the way that's a trophy catch if I have ever seen one... Les

Caught a couple in Brushy Creek just this morning. The first one had the same lesions that one has (easily visible toward the tail). Any idea what those are from?
That fish is a beauty though. I could put the two from this morning together and they wouldn't be as big as that guy!

Agree on the post-spawn appearance. That male's tail and fins are pretty raggedy, too. It's tough staying on top as the alpha male.

Introduced many years ago to the Texas Hill Country. Native only to the lower Rio Grande drainage, possibly as far north as the Nueces. TPWD info sheet hereThey are considered to be a nuisance fish in Louisiana because they have out-competed the native fish in a number of waters in and around New Orleans. Great fighters and very pretty.
