Kangfish and I are going out for Redfish. If anyone is interested in joining us, we would welcome anyone. Fun fishing, grilled steaks or Redfish for dinner, cold drinks. I'll have plenty of drinks, but, bring your own steak as we are counting on grilled Reds. Steaks are backup.
We will have a camp site. Anyone is welcome to join us. Just show up, and tell the office you are with gator_92 and kangfish. Each camp site is good for 8 people. After that you have to pay your own way.
We will be there about 2:00pm saturday, so show up after that.. We look forward to meeting and fishing with anyone who can make it.
Hope to see you....

Gator how did you guys do? I was down there a couple weeks ago, first time fishing for reds, and was only able to manage a handful of undersize ones. Next time you go drop me a line if you don't mine me tagging along.

Im still a rookie when it comes to fresh water redfish. They sure won this round. I normally use live perch. But, didnt on this day. I grabbed a couple of silver spoons, some plastics and jig heads.
Put in at the boat launch and paddled across the lake and started fishing near the discharge. But, along the way, we noticed grass hoppers every where, even way out in open water. Not just a few, it was an invasion.
Once we got to the fishing area the Redfish were thick. I didnt consider redfish as surface feeders, but they were eating these grass hoppers, taking them right off the surface. I tried putting a grass hopper on a hook but the fish only wanted the ones kicking on the surface. My son tried a Jitterbug and a Zara Spook, again the fish ignored them. Should have had a fly rod.
Total fish; one 10 little red pup on a silver spoon. Of course, he went back in the water.
Better Luck next time
Anyone else ever seen redfish do this?

It sounds like it would have been a great opportunity for fly fishing. With red rattletraps being a favorite, do you think goldfish would work?

It would have been a great time for fly fishing. I'll have to buy another fly rod because "Not Me" broke the one I had.
Think I'll try a red rat-l-trap next time as well. Too bad Fairfield doesnt have a bait shop in the park like Purtis Creek. I think the gold fish would catch plenty...

This time of year it would be very difficult to fish for them off the bank. They go deep, in the upper end of the lake near the dam. I dont know if you can bank fish at the dam. I have never tried to do that. Also this time of year, you must fish at night if you want to catch a redfish out of Fairfield.

You can catch reds off the bank at fairfield but you will need baloon rigs. There is a point off of the south shore, near the first boat ramp. You can fish from the point and let the wind take your balloon north. Best bait would be a talapia or perch. There is a channel that runs close to that point and the reds will tend to run up and down it. Get you a lake map and check it out. I dont think you can fish from the dam, unless you boated to it and I think it is in red on the dam, keep off. Also, Chrome traps are best or white with chartreuse backs. I have used red and caught nothing. Also, It is odd that you saw a bunch of small reds eating hoppers but possible. I think the last stocking was in january. Neat but if you saw reds eating hoppers, the reds were probably very very small. Night fishing is good in the summer months and IMO December-February are the best months for fishing this lakes. Large #'s of reds can be had during these months with little effort.(actually, its quite a bit of work for me, I just toss traps but we always catch). Good luck on your future trips and maybe I will see you out sometime.
