The ONLY reason to fish with a fly rod in Texas
is to throw a POPPER, casting any other type fly just means you're doing something.

If I go anywhere, it will probably be Super Secret Stocktank #7. I just don't have the intestinal fortitude (or a strong enough liver) to take the 'Ween out on the public waterways on a holiday weekend.*

WOOOOOOOOO!"

*Just so my position on this important campaign issue is clear, those folks have exactly as much right to be on the water and enjoy it as I do.

Nowhere near public lakes, that's for sure.

Cedar Creek in the 'Eye Ship, which is docked and loaded. Look out folks, we're bashing our way through the PWC's, Ski Boats, Sail Boats, Swimmers, Bar Hoppers, Pontoons, Kayakers and anything else we run over.

The 'Eye Ship rocks this weekend

Plus, IMO, If you aint drinking, you aint mowing.

Y'all keep your heads on a swivel and be prepared to repel boarders.

BHR, have you considered going to Purtis Creek? It might not be any less crowded, but you're unlikely to see any of the wakeboard/jetski crowd since it's idle only.

Leaving Sunday 4am for Venice,La for a week. Retirement is bad because you never get a day off. It's from now on!

Some people go to church and think about fishing. Some go fishing and think about God.

Eisenhower was worthwhile this morning. Pretty nice sunrise:

Quite cool to see a Little Blue Heron (in case you're wondering this is not a small Great Blue, but a different species, and not a bird I've seen often at all):

Caught a gang of dink stripers, a small spotted bass, a handful of small smallmouth, and this decent smallie, who put up a heck of a fight for a 15-inch fish:

Not a bad start to the holiday weekend.

Dude, that's awesome. That sunrise alone must have improved your sanity rating. The fish must have boosted you back near normal levels.

So what kind of bird is it?

Gracias - the sunrise was worth the trip indeed.

TX, the bird is in fact called "Little Blue Heron," Egretta Caerulea, and although they're not all that uncommon in the Southeastern US, I don't think I've seen more than two in my lifetime.

When I first saw it I thought it might have been a straggler Reddish Egret, which is quite a rare bird (maybe only 1500 breeding pairs left worldwide), but I ended up with a good enough photo to make a positive ID.
