Has anyone fished the small lake at Papy Elkins Park? It's the one behind the Dalworthington Gardens Police Dept.

I have fished it a few times. Never had a whole lot of luck.

Caught a few small bass there last summer and some small channel cats there a few weeks ago.

it used to be a great pond. However the city ripped out the fallen timber and the dang poachers killed my favorite pond, there used to be so many good fish in there.

My grandparents lived off of Rosevelt dr. Just down the street from Pappy Elkins. That's where I caught my first fish. circa 1975!! We used to go down there all the time in the 70s and 80s. But I haven't fished it since they moved from there in 1991.
I know this info doesn't help as far as the original question goes.... I just thought it was cool that you guys where talking about the neat little lake where I caught my first fish.

I live down the road from there and have been fishing there for years, and haven't caught a dang thing. I keep going back because I'm determined to find fish in there.

I know what you mean. I live about 5 minutes from there and have fished it quite a few times. The only thing I ever caught was 4 cat fish that looked like they should be in your home aquarium, about 4 inchs long.

This from a web search Star-Telegram piece in 2001. I thought it might be nice to update this for others searching for this:

"Pappy Elkins Lake in Dalworthington Gardens also ranked high for fishing.

The lake in Gardens Park began in the 1920s as a quarry when workers hit a natural spring and the quarry filled with water.

John Guzeljka, a city building inspector, said the lake is a catch-and-release lake to prevent overfishing.

"It started because people were pulling everything out of there," he said. "It's better if kids can pull out something to look at and then throw it back."

The lake is occasionally stocked by the Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife with catfish and bass. The lake also has crappie.

For more information on Joe Pool Lake, call the Trinity River Authority at (817) 467-2104.

For information on Pappy Elkins, call the Dalworthington Gardens main office at (817) 274-7662."
