I would have posted this and kept on doing daily reports, but god bless it, I dropped my phone in the bay. So, while I had access on my hubby's computer, it wasn't the same. Live shrimp under the lights at night caught speckled trout like nothing I've ever seen. It honestly got to a point where I was TIRED of catching speckled trout and wanted to catch anything else. Not dinks either. Good eating size, averaging about 20", but I caught many larger... including the one that snapped 12 lb test like it was a piece of hair. That thing was huge. Saw many tailing red drum up in the shallows while paddling around the back bays on kayaks. Didn't manage to catch any out there, but some of that was just for a lack of trying. We were just enjoying paddling and all the sun and exercize. Oh.... and, for those in the OT that's already seen it, we also had the pup along with us... Huyana the Shep-yote. Yes, that is a life vest on the dog. We had to tie her to the boat because she wanted to keep on jumping out chasing fish / birds / wanting to bring back bowies, etc. Saw a doormat off the back porch that turned out to be a flounder. While my coffee is strong, I doubt it'd stun him... and that was the only thing I had in my hands when I saw him. All in all, if you want to catch specks and fill your cooler to overflowing, head on down. They'll keep you up til you're literally sitting there falling asleep with the rod in your hands. Speaking from experience!

Plenty of bait back in Copano Bay.
Since TP&W stopped the shrimping back there 8 years ago it really has fattened up that bay with bait - year round with the past two mild winters, and the trout and reds have responded accordingly.

Sounds like a great time in Rockport. We've been fishing that area and piers, etc since I was a kid, in the mid-60's. Where did you end up staying? Were you catching those night fish from the hotel pier or did you go to the causeway or other location?

Reefs on south side and east side of Copano Bay are paying off.
Piers have good numbers under the lights at night.

To save answering this question in PM 5 more times... I stayed here.... Rockport Vacation Home Rentals - Bay House. The house has it's own private pier. Here's the view from my back door for a week... That was an extremely powerful light. Water is about 4' deep right at the pier.

WOW! Just checked out the link and that's a very nice looking place to stay, especially with good fishing right out the door! Might have to look into booking that one. A little pricey at $1,575 for 1 week but not much different than any condo I've rented off Port A.

Scott, that house is worth every penny. I was there for a week and paid enough to pay a month's mortgage on my home and that was a bargain. I can't tell you how magnificent it was to just be able to walk out there any time of the day or night and fish til I was bored. There was so much peace and quiet. There was only one night that I heard the neighbors having a party. Here's a pic of the back side of the house from the pier... Its small, make no bones about it. But... well... here. We spent many hours (I fell asleep a few times) in the hammocks tied up on the back porch. You don't hear traffic, you don't hear cars. You hear wind, waves, and birds.
