I cannot decide if it is better to have one rod in multilple weights or have multiples of commonly used rods 4,5,6,8,and 9?
Do you have multiple reels with floating line on one and sink line on another and swap them out?

i have one rod per every other weight. 3weight, 5 weight, 7 weight, 9 weight, 12 weight, and i do have a 10weight.
i have 3 spools for every rod i have that is rigged up with a floating line, intermediate line and a sinking line. i can rig up for any situation very quickly this way.
personally i would rather have 1 rod per weight with multiple spools/reels with different lines than several rods of the same weight or near weight (like a 4weight and 5weight or a 5weight and 6weight).

I just buy fly rods on a whim because I like how they cast. I have fly rods I have forgotten I have that billow forth from the back of the closet, reels that I have no accurate idea what weight line they have beyond "That's a honking big reel with a fat old line. Probably an eight" But that's just how I roll.

yeah I have 1-1wt, 1-3wt, 3-5wt, 2-6wt, 1-7wt, 3-8wt, 1-9wt, 1-10wt, 1-11wt(glass rod) 1-12wt
I use 5, 6 and 8 weights 90% of the time so I seem to have a surplus going there...

This is the worst exercise ever. I refuse to do invetory. Are you actually a wife/girlfriend gathering amunition? :P but really i have both. A few 5, 6, 7. Singles for the rest. I thought it would be usefull to have doubles to have both floating and sinking setups ready to go, but i went the extra spool route mostly so only one reel per weight really. And i usually just use different weights. I have a 7wt i like for sinking and then will bring another weight depending on what im doing (big bass poppers or small streamers for whites on top etc....) If i have room for more setup. Or just take a 6

after I reduced my inventory I am now down to 3-5wt 2-3wt and a 2wt reels for each with at least 2 spools, some have 3 spools. By the end of the summer I will have acquired a 7, 8, and 11 hopefully, maybe a 00
If I find a rod that I love the way it casts I don't care that I already have a rod in that weight, if I can I'll buy it

I agree with Bryan. Any attempt to formally count and catalog one's rods is asking for trouble. Let's just say I have quite a few, and yes, I sometimes duplicate rod weights with rods of different lengths, actions, or materials (graphite vs fiberglass vs bamboo). And yes, I have multiple reels and usually one or more extra spools for each reel, with floating, sink tip, full sinking, and intermediate lines.

So many I hate to tell. Let's just say I have from 2 wt. to 14 wt., but I'm partial to my 8's. 5 of those.
In this life there is fly fishing and tying...and then there is all that other stuff in between that doesn't matter.

We should all have as many fly rods as it takes. If my wife can have multiple pairs of black shoes I can have multiple weights of the same fly rod.

We should all have as many fly rods as it takes. The problem is that it always takes "just one more" than I have. Strangely, this occurs even when I don't use half the ones I already own. I asked my wife just yesterday what would be wrong with just wanting more flyrods because they're cool toys and surprisingly she said "nothing". I'm not sure who pulled the Jedi mind trick on who. I'll bet on her, maybe something like "these aren't the rods you are looking for", but maybe it means I don't need to explain in painful detail why I need 3 different 5wts. Yeah right.

How many fly rods does a person need? "Just one more!!!" I have rods form 1/2wt to 10wt and multiples of several weights down the line. If fly fishing is what you want to do you've gotta have them!!!

I have a couple of 3-wts in different lengths (one graphite, one fiberglass) and a reel that matches both nicely, which means having a couple different spools with 3 and 4-wt lines. I have a 5-wt, a 6-wt, and a couple 7s with 2 reels and 4 spools that allow me to fish any of those rods pretty quickly, though I find I grab the 6 more often than anything. I have an 8 but don't fish it very often.
Having all this gear (and this is a small collection by almost anyone's standards) is neat. What pains me, though, is that I am not really finding much time to fish. So the gear doesn't really do me much good in that scenario.
I do like the one-reel, multiple-spool setup, though. With that and three different rods, I feel like I can go almost anywhere and be pretty much a completely self-righteous snot.

I caught a smallie yesterday, at Texoma !
The ONLY reason to fish with a fly rod in Texas is to throw a POPPER, casting any other type fly just means you're doing something.
