I have said stuff before on here about this but I'm going to try again. I have a 14 foot Jon boat pretty old has tx numbers all that good stuff but the last time is has been registered was in 98. Well last year me and a buddy thought it would be a good idea to put a deck on it give it a paint job and so on well long story short we painted over the tag with all the numbers on it........... I still have the tx numbrs but nothing else what do I need to do to get the registration back up to date?
Any help would be great. Thanks guys

Go to the local TPWD office and plead your case, explain everything the best you can and ask them what needs to be done. I have read the website and all the FAQ's did what I thought was necessary and it still wasn't right, the best thing is to ask them what to do.

You can get on TP&W web sight to find out but I would guess you are talking about a heck of a penalty per year and they may even make you register it for all 14 years.

I think it sometimes depends on the clerk you get. Might call Austin and talk to them.

You do not have to register 14' boats if they do not have a motor on them, if they are used with/without a motor on private water,or have not been used at all. I have one that has not been used in several years and I have not registered it in those years. If you have a title and know the registration numbers you should have no problem registering the boat. Remember your local county Tax Assesor can also register your boat for you and most of the time it is a lot easier--she/he has an elected position there fore is accountable to you.

If the title on record is in your name, even if you do not have a hard copy, you will have NO problems, even at the TPWD field offices. As long as you legally own the boat, they will be happy to take your money.
If the title is not in your name, you are in for a tough go...

Hays County quit years ago because they said that 95% came back needing some kind of correction or some other paperwork that was not included. Then they had to trace that person down and it turned into a cluster-smuck. Then there was the,"Well who is going to pay for the late fee since the paper work got turned down, the county or the owner?" So before you go tramping off to the County Clerks office, Call ahead. Better yet. Go to TPWD's web site and there is a list of places that will help you do the paperwork.

Get the title from him, if you can't you'll have to file lost title.
