Am kind of intrigued with the 7' glass rod at Cabela's. Fiberglass is strong stuff, so it would probably hold up well if a big ole bass happened to take the fly, don't you think?

The Dogwood Canyon rod is a little cheaper, but I assume it is made of graphite and, therefore, not as strong.

That's something I would never have thought of. Found an old 6' medium action casting rod in the garage and found an old fly reel with 8wt sinking line on it. Hooked'um up and made a few cast. Was amazed at how far I could cast the line with that outfit. Funny, strange, peculiar, would never have thunk it! Thanks for suggesting it.

Just don't blame me when you rip a hole in the space-time continuum by using a fly reel on a casting rod. smile It is nice to know that something like that will work in a pinch. I tried a few yard casts with a similar setup a couple of years back and, like you, I was pleasantly surprised with how it worked. Poor folks have poor ways. smile

I don't know if I'd say that graphite is not as strong as fiberglass. There's a whole construction materials/phsyics/apples to oranges argument in there somewhere.

I do know that between two rods designed for similar line weights in 'glass and graphite, the graphite rod will most likely be lighter in weight and faster in "action". I'm sure someone else can explain that in a more elegant manner than I.

I really like the combination of 'glass and graphite, but then I've got th' Mini Mag poisonin'. smile

Well, will give me something to think about awhile before I place an order and am stuck with my decision, i.e. whether to go with the graphite, or with the glass/graphite combination. I plan to fish next Tuesday, and may take the weird casting rod/fly line combo out and see if I can tempt a bream with it. If nothing else, it will blow my fishing partner's mind and give me a good laugh. He only fishes for bass and has never owned a fly rod.

Never miss an opportunity to make the "conventional" folk think we fly flingers are a half of a bubble off of plumb. smile

He already thinks my elevator doesn't go to the top floor. Taking this rig will make him think it doesn't leave the ground. It already frustrates him that I normally catch more fish than he does. LOL

No problem. I'm glad you found it helpful and I hope so other, more knowledgeable folks will chime in here as well.

I'm late to the party but I'll put in a word for the Cabela's glass rods. I have the 6'6" 3 wt and it is an excellent little brim rod that I have also used to catch some trout (but don't tell TXRR or Bass Bug because they'll start calling me a trouthole again, and that inevitably leads to a whole off-topic thing about someone's mom. Nobody *really* wants that, and if they do, I'm sure there are about 96,000 web sites to serve the purpose).

Anyway, back to the rod. I'd grab a 7' 4-wt any time, and I'd put a 5-wt line on it and rock out. It's a leisurely, buttery-smooth casting rod. I think you'll like it.

I believe Obama came out in favor of troot last week

as for short rods, girls say they don't care but....oh wait a minute, short FLY rods...they are more accurate at the cost of distance but nobody catches fish out more than 40 foot in Texas anyway

Jack, I'm glad to hear from someone that has one of the Cabela's glass rods, and that you like it. And, BassBug, I'm glad to have your thoughts about short FLY rods. I think I'm about ready to place an order with Cabela's.

You might call down to Buda and see if they have any in stock. Probably not, but it's worth a shot so you can see if you like it before hand. You know, not casting it, but shaking it towards the ceiling with an appraising look on your face and a grunt now and then before you put it back in the rack smugly. smile

Just to add to your options, TFO's Bug Launcher rods are worth a look. They are nice rods.

Just another one to consider, Sage makes a 7 ft 3 wt in their flight series. Great little rod, especially for creek fishing where you dont have as much room to move around.

For what its worth, i often fish out of a 16 ft aluminum bass boat with baitcasters and fly rods all over the place and have yet to have issues with rods on the deck. Doors and docks that have claimed all of my rod breakage.

If you are just worried about a clumsy partner, you can always leave the rods fully rigged and take them apart at the middle section. Then it wont stick out in the back seat, and you can pick it up and be fishing in a few seconds.

I took my 8' rod in the 16-foot boat and it worked out ok with the two of us in the boat. I had to be a little careful about where I placed it when I laid it down and picked up another rod, but that wasn't a problem.

The information all of you provided on this thread was very helpful, and I am grateful.
