howdy,
I am thinks about getting a yak instead of a conoe
,but i would like to know what are some good yaks for beginners. I am looking at the Heritage Featherlite Angler Kayak. does any one else have this one or know of any other SIK that are about the same price range for a beginner.

thanks Jerome

Everyone should start out with a Wilderness Sytem RIDE for their first. If you find you dont like it you will get your money back just by posting it on this or the TKF site.It is very stable and comfortable for me to be in for a day trip or over niter. The next would be a Hobie Quest for stability and comfort.Getting back on the ride,I have gone on overnite trips in mine with a lot of stuff in the hull and on top.It has a 350 lbs wt. limit.I have never over loaded it.You just need to try others out and pick according to your preference.Check with MARINER SAILS in Dallas. They go to White rock lake with several yaks for people to try out.s

Canoes, too, are unobtrusive; they don't storm the natural world or ride over it, but drift in upon it as a part of its own silence. (John Graves)

Good advice copperhead, the ride is a good beginners yak or for someone wanting stability over speed. I really enjoy my Ride. If you can take the time and find a place to try out different models Jerome, I say do that and then decide which style fits you best. Wilderness Systems have some really broad and good choices to choose from. Good luck Jerome

Jerome,
You specifically mentioned a SIK. Any reason for a SINK over a SOT? I'd recommend a SOT, personally. They are extremely versatile and really a better alternative unless you're planning on yakking in the wintertime.

As the others say, check a few out first. TKF can be a good source for used yaks and the dealers also have trades and demos that can be had for a good price. Get a good boat and as Copperhead says, they hold their value very well.

Get one and enjoy! I love mine.
JC

I am thinking about a SIK so I am mot limited to the summers, and also so I can go down some rivers also

I am going to go and look at one for sale next weekend it is an Old Town Otter Kayak.
I don't think it is a fishing yak, but I am sure i can figure something out.

There is a Heritage featherlite angler currently in the want ads @ TKF for 250. Includes everything you need to get started. Looked like a decent deal.

Check out the Mainstream Kingfisher...It can be purchased at BPS at about $400. I have one and I love it. I bought it strictly for fishing. I did consider the Ride but the price was the hangup, but it looks like a nice ride though... Anton

If you have the option of trying out different models, that is the way to go. Then you won't be surprised at what you end up with. Good luck on your renting and OUCH on the root canal!!

Renting is a great way to find out what you want.
