I have two yaks, both 12'. I have a GMC Sierra with a 6.5 foot bed and when the tailgate is down, that stretches to 8 feet. I have tied them in, one on top of the other diagonally which leaves about 3.5 feet of kayak hanging off the end.

What is the best method of hauling two yaks? If I continue to tie them in, what is the best tying material? Can I use bungee cords to keep them in?

I like a lot of speed with a kayak, but I don't want them bouncing down the road at 60 mph.

My advice is to get a construction rack and let them hang over your cab. Bungies are fine as long as you get short ones so they stay tight. Good Fishin' DC

gregorkhan,

Check out Harbor Freight's bed extender. You can wrap the base with foam insulation (or pool noodles) for a soft ride. And then use short bungies to strap on to the bed extender. You are able to carry 2 yaks with this extender (side by side).

Here is the link showing the bed extender from Harbor Freight. Also, I believe there is a store location in South Ft. Worth. Check with them, they might have one in Dallas also. Or just order from the internet to save gas $.

Here is a link with a lot of helpful chat/info and even some pictures of your options with the bed extender:

I too have 2 kayaks and I converted a Dilly boat trailer into a flat bed and strap them down to it. It is light enough to be pulled by my jetta or truck. Mine are 14 foot and a 13 footer.

I have a 12 foot Hobie and I am using an old trailer I used to haul my two man bassbuster on. It works perfectly and I can haul it with my Nissan Pickup or my Sentra.

My 12'er rides well on my econobox car roof racks. The pool noodles keep the scratching down to a minimum.

Construction rack.... I made one that I can take apart and store easily when it's not being used. I haul two Tarpon 140's on mine. Never had any problems. It cost me $50 to construct.
