I am looking at a boat with a Yamaha 70 on it. Owner says it runs fine but hasnt been started in over a year and will most likely need carb cleaning / work. I have watched a couple of carb cleaning vids on youtube and it looks straight forward. Not much different that and ATV Carb actually.

Does anyone have any pointers are advice for this moter regarding carb cleaning? I have a good shot at getting the boat and if so I want to try and save the expense of taking it into a shop to have it donw. Any advice direction is much appreciated. Thanks.

My advice would be to get a service manual if you want to do the work yourself.

Other than that I would see if it really needs to be tore down, get a tank of fresh gas with some seafoam in it and try it. While I dont advise parking a boat for a year without using it, it isnt the kiss of death either. I also recomend checking compression and stuff before buying it.

Dont run it untill you clean those carbs. Pay attention to detail, lay the parts out in order as it comes apart, use your cell phone cam to take pics if you need to. Cary

Sometimes Sea Foam will clean them up, sometimes not. The first thing is to get rid of all of the old gas and clean the tank. If the fuel is contaminated and you just start adding gas, then you have a full tank of contaminated gas. If the motor hasn't run ina year, I would wnt to have it checked out, carbs, compression, etc. If it isn't right, get an estimate and use that as a negotiating tool with the seller. if you are already getting a super deal on the boat, then it may not be a big deal. I would have a reputable shop check it out ayway just so you know what you are starting out with.
If it has a lean sneeze at idle and idles rough, then the carbs definitely need some attention.

If you do clean it - don't waste your time with the "spray and pray" method. Go to autozone or napa and spend $30 on a gallon of "Carb Dip" - break them down and soak them for at least 4 hours - spray them clean with the spray carb cleaner and re-assemble.

I did had to do it twice on my Nissa 25hp four stroke because I thought just spraying them would be sufficient and like the wise one's said - I was wrong.

It wasn't difficult but I've heard that if they get our of sync then you have to have the re-synced and that is something I didn't want to attempt myself - thankfully mind didn't.

At the end it ran better than when it was new!!

For reference - if I decided to have the carbs cleaned professionally....does anybody have a ballpark price I might be looking at?

I also have a 70 2 stroke yamahah. It's a 98 model and has been a great motor. Last year due to me having my daughter didn't use it but maybe once. Took it out this year and it ran horrible, after running it on thee hose and putting every kind of fuel treatment known to man in it I broke down and cleaned the carbs. Best decision I ever made. Took about an hour just do it step by step one thing at a time. Most importantly be sure to count how many turns the mixing screws have on them because that's where I messed up. But after I figured that out I can promise you I swear its never run as good as it does now and it was definitely worth it.

if your in the dfw area call ronnie at texas machine works and talk to them.
carbs are pretty straight forward if you just pay attn to what came off where, do one at a time so you have one assembled for reference. get a manual, clymers are good.

I am going to have agree with redchevy. Try it with Sea Foam, fresh fuel first and check the compression before you buy it.

I am going to definitely try it with a shock level mixture of Carb Cleaner / Sea Foam first in a small quanity of mix first. I will get a can of the spray type CC as well. If that doesnt work I will probably attempt the tear down and clean up myself if I can get my hands on a good manual.

The boat is priced perfect for me - had my Bro-inlaw and nephew go check it out for me last night. Looks like I am going to get it.

Dont put b-12 in it. Use seafoam or something similar.

Sea Foam has a product in a spray can called Kreep. Good stuff.

I tried a seafoam/fuel mixture and the spray cleaners with no luck and a lot of wasted time. I'd start with the dip if I had to do it again. Just my $0.02
