We're forming a bass tournament, and have 4 lakes established. Kayakers are welcome. It's limited to boats no more than 12 foot long electric trolling motor only, float tubes, kayaks, kick-boats and jons.

Information is here.

Kelly,

Does the 12 foot boat limitation apply to Kayaks as well? My Kayak is 13'6". I think there are a lot of fishing kayaks that are longer than 12 feet.

Yes, the 12 foot limitation applies to all boats. I originally wanted to establish it at 16 foot, but it would then become an issue of HP ratings and limits. Some of the guys wanted it 11 foot, with no more than 5HP. We ended up settling on 12 foot, with electric only.

Coach, I'd love to hook up sometime. Just let me know. If you get up this way any, all the better. I don't know anyone in Houston, and never make it down that way.

I would be very interested in this. I fish out of an eleven foot kayak and usually hit either the Grasslands or Ray Bob. I cant make the first tourny as that is the day of my wedding but will try to get in on some of the others. Of course the wedding isnt till 5pm so....no better not. I dont have a live well but could build one. Is a stringer out of the question? Seems like a floating live well would create alot of drag.

Thanks for your interest. A stringer would not be allowed, as that is almost a guarantee of killing the fish.

I don't know the first think about kayaking, as I'm a float tuber and pond boat user. But, I have seen web articles about livewells being built for kayaks. They generall use the same small 12V rechargeable battery I use for my graph. They're about $20 at Academy, and you can also by a charger for about the same price.

Yes, a floating well provides a lot of drag. The one I have is very good for the fish, as it's large and has a frame. But, it creates a tremendous drag, and I have to take that into consideration when I'm fishing. I don't cover as much water when I have it with me. I've also found that if I take a long rope, it's easier to pull further behind than right alongside the tube.

Go to http://www.texaskayakfisherman.com/index.php and look at the rigging section.

Kelly I would like to participate, but my kayak is 14 foot and according to your rules it is too long, but I could put a 109lb thrust trolling motor on a 12 foot john boat and be legal. In my opinion there should not be a lenght limit on a paddled boat. Any considerations on allowing any size of a paddled boat? THANKS.......

I just put this together in the past two weeks. My original plan was for up to 16 foot boats and 25HP outboards. Many guys had bassbusters, and no one seemed to have the bigger "small" boats. Personally, I don't see that a 12 foot jon or kayak makes a difference, especially if it's electric motor only.

The original posters to my thread wanted it limited to 11 foot boats, but I raised it to 12 foot since some of the pond boats are 11.3 inches. Like I said, I still don't think that 2 feet extra you have over a 12 foot yak makes a difference.

I tell you what I'll do...I'll email everyone who has responded so far, and put it up for a vote. I'll have a final answer within 24 hours for you.

Rules have been amended. Kayaks have no length limit. For the exact wording, see this post in the Bass Fishing section.
