I was talking to a guy i met about fishing and he told me he used to work with some guys who would use some sort of soap as bait and the fish would tear it up. I was wondering if anyone had heard of this or tried it? If so what kind of soap and how did you get it to stay on the hook??

My Dad & best friend's Dad were P&G Soap catfishermen back in the 50s & early 60s. I did find some catfish soap down at Lake Corpus Christi (old Lake Mathis) back in 1979 to which the Catfish tore up. It would float. I have also tried Redneck's soap. It is pretty good, but it does not float.

Governor Ann Richards in one of her biographical statements, speaks of catfishing with soap when she was in her youth. I think you can google that.

I agree with OkBlueHunter. Why buy any bait, when there is a lake full of what they already prefer to eat just waiting for the taking.

Lye soap and zote soap work. Biggest I've caught on it was a 9-10lb blue. Reason it works though is because these soaps contain animal fat. So after sitting in the water for some time (longer than most care to sit with a r&r) the animal fat is released into the water. Its really only used for trotlines. Typically big fish don't go for it, but if you want to stock the fridge, it works. I've seen crazy numbers of fish pulled out pf the water on soap.

Oh, and as far as expense goes, you can bait about 100 hooks with one 97 cent bar of soap.

I generally put them right on ice in a chest I have drilled a few holes in the bottom of so the water will run off as the ice melts an keeps them fresh up to 8-10 hours this way

No bait will produce if you arent fishing where the fish are. I can almoat guarantee you, if you find the fish, fresh bait will outcatch soap by a wide margin. Shad/perch are not magic baits. They arent going to automatically catch fish, but do yourself a favor and set yourself up for success, by using that bait that has the highest chance of producing, and that hands down is live, or fresh dead bait fish.
