Well did not take any fishing poles on the trip but had a blast. A friend and I kayaked from bastrop to smithville. We got in the water at 9:10a.m. and we got to smithville at 6:56 p.m. That was a great trip. Wish I would have taken a pole though. We paddled hard a good 5-6hrs. of the trip. I took a disposable waterproof camera with me so I should beable to get some pictures up later this week. The 30 mph wind was killer. That hole night it felt like someone attached 50lb weights to each of my arms. Here is a suggestion for anyone that wants to get into the longdistance kayak. "Get some good gloves" My hand are still swollen.

A biologist did a talk on fish sampling at AFF a couple of monthes ago. The fish populations/size increase dramaticaly away from the cities, especialy downstream of Bastrop, atributed to infrequent access points.
Yes you should have taken a rod.

I kayaked that stretch of river last spring, but we camped out about half way down. That's about a 30 mile run. You guys must be hard core paddlers! The Colorado is my first choice for kayak fishing when I can get away.

fishr3: Where did you camp? On an island? How did that work out? What kind of gear did you bring?

I've been thinking of doing this stretch as a two-day trip for a while, and now my wife and I finally have the kayaks.

You can camp on any island or sandbar. Texas Parks and Wildlife say it is ok. Try to pack as light as you can. Ideas: small tent if wife is scared of sleeping outside, water, beer, prepaired food in dry locking containers. Get some gloves I think that weight lifting gloves should work well and the are cheap.

Now if you guys want a good laugh look at my other post Colorado River Trip From Hell
