I talked ugly about circle hooks until learning (right here on the TFF catfishing section and fishing with smarter people than me) that snelling them makes higher percentage hook ups. Palomar knots were what I was using, and I was not getting near the hook ups that I was expecting. Snelling did improve this, but I think forcing myself to reel and not jerk the hook set did alot for the percentage also.

I always use a polomar. Why do y'all snell is it a better hook set or strength? Snell one then pull it (gently so as to not bury the hook in your hand) thru your hand and thumb like it was a fish's mouth, then do the same with one tyed with a palomar. See which one always puts the point of the hook right in the side of your hand.

Glad I found this today. I got a new reel and with it new braid and circle hooks. Just snelled the hooks per this thread. I can't wait to land a nice flattie. I got an Abu 6600 C4

Snell the hook, palomar the swivel. There's a pretty neat app you can get on your iphone called Knot Wars, I havent used hardly any of the sweet knots that it shows how to tie but it shows breaking stregnth and all that good stuff.

It is the type of hook that matters in this instance. If you are using a circle hook you want to snell it because that type of know forces the hook point into the side of the fish's mouth and results in more hook ups. If you are using a different type of hook than a circle then the knot you type only matters in reference to its strength...
