May have something to do with water depth and the forage that they have. I don't know of a lot of ponds that are stacked with shad, so they're probably scavenging or eating a lot of perch, and since most ponds are shallow, they spend a lot of time in the mud. Also, ponds don't usually have any kind of fresh water flow, so they sit in the same pool of water all the time.

That's just my theory anyway. I will in no way claim to be an authority on the subject. Just seems logical.

I've noticed if a pond is mossy, the cats will taste bad. Seems like catfish caught from a river taste the best. Of course, every body of water is slightly different so there's dozens of variables to consider. This is a good question, and I hope there's some more opinions.

If the pond is in a residential park, city park etc. it is liable to be full of fertilizer etc from the lawns. I wouldn't eat anything out of a small pond.

"Also, ponds don't usually have any kind of fresh water flow, so they sit in the same pool of water all the time." BINGO! We have a winner in the back of the room.

I should add, keep those same fish in your bathtub for a few days with tap water (changing daily) and they will taste much better when you cook them.
