I am stationed at Dyess AFB in Abilene and I am trying to get into some good size gills. I am willing to drive for good fishing and I have a few kitchen passes coming up so im looking for good spots to hit. Any info would be greatly appreciated. I dont have a boat so I will be banking it

Lake Conroe is the #1 rated public access gill fishing lake in Texas as reported by a webzine.

LBL in Austin has some big gills, as does Lake Dunlap. The epic reports we were getting last winter have tapered off a bit for Dunlap, but the Austin folks are still catching some nice slabs.

I went to college in Abilene, and lived in Coleman for a while. The Colorado River, right there in downtown Coleman, has a healthy population of 8-10 inch gills and can be fished from shore. 65 miles from Abilene.

Thanks for all the info guys. I'm originally from Memphis so I am used to fishing for gill and catching some pretty big ones. I was actually looking at a guided trip for fathers day and someone mentioned lake conroe to me. i will definitely be getting out to these lakes.

Houston County Lake is suppose to have some mighty big bluegills and shellcrackers, too! Also plenty of Spotted Bass to tie into there for bonus. Bunches of creeks and coves. Just have to find folks who know them pretty good. HC Lake tends to run clearer than Conroe (although Conroe doesn't really get muddy), but with all the rain, they'll both be red and brown for a while.

Keep us updated on the bream goings on out that way. Would love to hear reports from up there!

Mister Fish,

If you are interested in fishing Conroe for 'gills, and are interested in a guided trip contact Simon at :

http://www.lakelivingstoncatch.com/

He's a great guy and works really hard...tell him Meadowlark referred you please if you decide to go that way. You won't be sorry.

He also runs 'gill trips to HCL but don't know if he has been there this spring yet. Been trying to hook up with him for a run to HCL myself.
