If I'm throwing it with a belly weighted hook I like 12 or 14 pound flourocarbon - if I'm throwing it weightless I like 12 or 14 pound Mono - Suffix LoVis Green

If I am working it under the water then 12-15 lb flouro (flouo helps the bait fall more naturally and not tail first as it would with mono)

Targeting docs: Then 30lb braid with 12-15 lb flouro LEADER (@ 3 ft leader)

Working it fast on top: 12-15 lb mono, prefer 12 super stren (saltwater lines works awesome)

Most everyone has made the assumption that you know this. Don't go to a new lake and start fishing with a slow approach to start with. Fish the fluke on a very specific peace of structure, like a log or dock. It's easier to go slow when you believe there is a fish right there with feet of you.

Simply - just imagine it as a hard jerkbait. Fish it as such.

Best results for me is weightless on a #4 widegap hook, and let it soak. Pitch it out, let it sink, then twitch twitch, let it sink. Pitching it into cedar bushes and next to stumps is the funnest way to fish it as your line just tightens up. I fish it more than texas rigged stuff now.

Sounds like you are on the right track. Time on the water with trial and error will get you focused in.

When I'm wanting to cover an area quicker I'll use a Mustad double weighted hook. I run the hook into the nose and remove it before I insert the weighted nose hold. Sometimes I'll even use a glass rattle for extra attention. Just drop the bait in the water and let it sink. You'll see why they hit it.

I went out with a Fork guide and we did this and killed em early in morning while they were chasing shad.

First we were using regular looking 4" shad looking swimming type baits without paddle tails. He used a long straight shanked hook, 5/0 I think. the hook was tex-posed (skin-hooked) behind the slit, just where the tail started to taper, in the thin part of the bait, the hook acts as a keel. Cast as far as possible, retrieve with the rod tip almost straight up, creating a bow in your line so as the line doesnt touch the water, the line goes right to the nose of the bait, keeping the line out of the water. Retrive in a smooth easy speed to create a nice constant wake, keeping the bait just on top of the water. Fish feed lookin up, they see the wake, and follow it right to the bait..worked for us, we caught fish for a couple hours, til the sun drove em off...jim

It depends on several factors for me. I almost always fish it weightless. In the fall I tend to fish is faster with more twitches (2-4) then let it die for a second repeat. In the spring I cast and let it sink a few seconds then twitch repeat.

What does this mean? I imagine everyone's idea of slow is different. So how long do you leave your bait in the area you are targeting?

The majority of any given day bass are in a neutral feeding mood. They probably will eat something but chances are theyre not going to aggressively chase something down, especially bigger fish. When this is the case, slower presentations, even non moving presentations, will give fish the time to leisurely examine it and maybe pick it up to eat. In most cases, slow presentations will get bit more than fast presentations. Of course there are exceptions but as a general rule its true.

Also think about what the world is like under the water surface. Most of the time everything is moving around pretty slowly or not moving at all. Slow presentations are usually more natural looking than something being whipped around. Of course there are times when you want a bait to catch attention and look out of place, looking for a reaction bite as an example, than a fast and erratic retrieve would work. But generally slow is better and will get more bites.

I've caught many a bass on a c-rig using a fluke as bait...they will inhale it!
