Go to lake FOrk Marina and get you some santone football jigs. 3/4 oz will do for just about everything between 10 and 30 ft. Darker shades for overcast days (black/brown/Amber, PBJ) and lighter watermellon type colors for sunny days (Mexican heather, Sloppy joe, Grass hopper). I prefer a yammamoto hula grub trailer. in green pumpkin on all the above jigs i've mentioned. lots of good points and road beds and humps between the dam and the 515 on the west end of the lake to fish. Good luck!

I'll post a pic after I figure out how to work my POS phone. For what its worth, I've got about 2 dozen of both Talon football and flip jigs in 1/2oz and 3/4oz.

Talon makes a "Classic" Football head jig. Looks like Talon already addressed your concerns and asked what they could do to make it right for ya last week in a shakey head thread you ranted about their football head jigs on.

Our football jigs are NOT shaky heads.

Ryan I do wish you would have contacted us before making a public complaint. We are happy to speak to our customers directly, especially when they have an issue with our product.

We designed our Talon football jigs in the classic finesse style because they are intended for fishing deep water with lighter line. A light wire hook facilitates a much better hookset when there's lots of line out between the angler and the jig. They are a tool intended for a specific use, and our Talon football jigs have proven excellence in their intended application.

To correct your technical complaint made on TW, our 3/8 and 1/2oz football jigs have 4/0 size Mustad hooks. If you check around, most football jigs are manufactured with 2/0 or 3/0 hooks in those jig sizes. Our 5/8, 3/4, 7/8 and 1oz footballs have 5/0 size Mustad hooks. Again, check around and see how many manufacturers are using 3/0 and 4/0 size hooks in those jig sizes. We were one of the first manufacturers to ever use those large hook sizes in football jigs. The hooks are indeed light wire - in fact our Mustad hooks are the same wire diameter as Jewel's Mustad hooks and many other jig brands.

I agree that there's a time and place for a football jig that incorporates a heavy wire hook. If you intend to use heavy tackle you should either choose a football jig made for that job - not a classic style football jig intended for more of a finesse approach - or modify your hookset and landing to respect the wire diameter. We've coached many, many anglers who have successfully adapted their technique with great results. Please give us a call and we're happy to help; we've been fishing and making football jigs since the 80's way before they were cool.

I responded to Andi's PM and will address him before I comment further. I did not follow up with that thread or would have responded to him directly before 'ranting' in another thread. Thanks.

Traditionally Football head jigs do have a light wire hook. It's to improve your hookup ratio on a long line. Less diameter means better penetration. If you are bending hooks on 2lb bass you are setting the hook way too hard! Back off your drag, it's meant to help you not only keep from breaking your line but to keep fish hooked up.

Everyone has their own opinions and preferences, but your statements are just false. The stout hook is a fad these days. I'm not saying it doesn't work, but it's not necessary. Stout hooks are for horsing fish out of heavy cover.

You are entitled to your own opinion, but your statements are uneducated.

Football JIgs are not suppose to have a heavy wire flipping hook in them. That is not what they are designed for. They are designed for Deep water and 15lb test Fluorocarbon. Set your drag properly and they cant bend the hook. You can't fish them like a flipping jig w/65lb braid with the drag locked down, that wasn't what they were designed for...... Football jigs are more of a finesse technique.

Is what I was thinking also Shawn. Never heard it called that until now.

I use 2 kinds of hooks in my football jigs. I use a Light Wire Gama Hook and also use a HVY Wire Mustad hook. In my opinion, a light wire mustad is way to light for a football jig. I use those in my shake heads and is why I use a gama in my light wire footballs. Little bit stouter hook than a light wire mustad. Cost a little more but well worth it in my opinion.

Good Luck

I have heard the "light wire hooks for better penetration" argument before... that may have been the case back in the days of stretchy mono and carpy rods, but I have never had a problem getting a hookset with a fb jig with flouro and a 7ft heavy rod.

Get a good map and follow Raider Dales post, keep moving until you find them, and you should get bit.

I tryed Ouzo Bait's Bayou Bug as per their recomendation as a Jig Trailer, that thing is wild!!!!! the legs don't stop moving and that big flapping tail sends lots of vibration as the jig falls. It's awesome By far the best jig trailler I have found, beaten them up in Fork, Pallestine and Rayburn. Bass pick that thing up and carry it for miles, I guess it's something different. Uhh.. the Jig more tournaments won it than anything else. Learn it and become the Jigmaster.

Here are a couple nice fish caught on those "light wire" Talon football jigs this evening. Enjoy!

Disclaimer: None of the hooks were bent in the process of catching these fish.
