for dip bait you need dip worms with punchbait you just need a treble hook and push the bait all the way to the bottom and pull out an an angle it stays on the hook pretty well

I have experimented with just about every kind of dip bait. Finally tried Sonny's dip bait 7 yrs. ago and it has out fished all the other dip bait. IMO And it is real sticky enough that I can fling it out a long ways casting and it does not get thrown off. If you have never tried it yet you might give it at least a try and see if it does you any better than what you have tried so far. I use shad for blues and the Sonny's has always perform shad when i fish for channel cats and this is useing shad on other poles next to my dip bait poles. I also really like how the furry thing from Team Catfish holds the dip bait also. It does are real good job of loading the dip bait and holding it on the hook.

When you say fresh shad, you mean ones you catch with your throw nets, and then cut them up? Also, what kind of circle hook are you using to keep it on?

I've never used dip bait and probably never will especially if I'm targeting blues. Use a cast net and catch fresh shad 3-6 inches long cut in half and use the head end. I use 4/0 to 6/0 circles.

Yea when I say fresh either caught it an put right on a hook or put directly on ice. I use a 8/0-10/0 either gamakatsu or invicta circle just depends in how the fish are biteing an how big the baits are
