 Is a proper rod a necessity?

I was curious, is a proper rod going to help me catch more fish? I figure since I am new and am still learning the techniques, that a bass rod or whatever isn't necessary. Am I wrong for thinking this? or should I go out and buy a new rod that is more fitted for bass fishing? It is a Cabelas tourney trail IM7, its a combo I got probably 7 years ago.

The proper rod just makes it easier to get the maximum efficiency for the bait its listed for. It won't make you catch more fish but it will help you land more for sure.
You know the old saying
If it floats, flys, or f___s it is always cheaper to rent!
You have to decide which is more important.

Using a proper rod/reel is more for efficiency, the right rod for pitching jigs let's you lay the bait in smaller areas with more accuracy. The right rod for a crank will let the fish get the hooks better. The right rod for a c rig will give your more leverage on a hookset. So will the right rod get you more bites? No. Will it help you turn those bites into boated fish? Absolutely

Spend your money on a good rod, get a economical, decent reel....H2O reels are cheap proven reels for example... I used to buy all Shimano & Diawa now I'm saving money on H20 and buying Dobynns Rods too stick them on..
A good Rod can help you feel & catch more fish!

I think some of the more serious bass fisherman on here will probably say yes. Majority of them have rods & reels set up for specific lures and actions. I will tell you that before my grandpa passed away last year he was catching bass on rigs that were almost as old as me.....he would tie whatever onto whichever and just fish. Use what you've got for now, do some research on what's out there and when you have some extra cash to spend go get ya a new rig. Then build on that one from there, before you know it you'll have a dozen rods rigged up for specific lures. Be careful of the bass bug, once you get bit you'll spend countless dollars on anything and everything to catch a fish......good luck!

Don't spend money you need for something more important.Its just fishing.Just like with golf or tennis the most expensive stuff won't make you a better player up to a point.I used some pretty average gear for many years and caught a lot of fish with it.I really think the right gear is more pleasurable to fish with but it really doesn't help catch a lot more fish.

When I got started I was rocking a zebco 202. I was catching fish regularly.

Just buy the cheapest [censored] you can find and use it. My most expensive rod is like $17.

Thanks for the input. Well I will buy one later this summer after I start catching fish, and fishing more often. I don't feel confident enough in my skills yet. Ill hone them in, then purchase a decent rod. That way I can't blame it on the rod. haha.

IT's just like any other hobby/sport. Can you catch a baseball with a cheap, kids glove -- sure, and you might make some good plays with it. But could you do better with a more expensive pro glove -- you bet.
The more you get into bass fishing you'll find nicer quality gear really adds to your ability to catch fish.

I don't believe in the technique specific rods. Those are to catch a fishermans wallet. Your rod choice should be based on what you like. My favorite is a 7 foot medium action with a fast tip I can do everything with it crank, flip, pitch,spinnerbait you name it. I do switch to a 7 foot medium heavy for criggin it also has a fast tip.

Dont listen to half these people , Buy a nice combo that can fit almost all types of fishing

Nobody said he had to buy a G Loomis. He just asked if techniaue specific rods are better than a general rod for everything. Even All Stars at $50 have technique specific rods.
