Hello,

I am new to fishing. I've tried fishing a few places at lake lewisville but have not had much luck. I am willing to try any other lakes around the area to. Few questions.
1) What types of fish are safe to eat from the DFW lakes?
2) Can anyone specify any exact places to fish?
3) How should i have my hook/weight setup. I know there are millions of different ways to set up poles just wondering if there is a standard way that works well. I've just been using minnows, should I be using any type of fake baits?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Might help to post what kind of fish you are trying to target. Sounds like maybe you are catfishing/sandbass/hybrid fishing or something of that sort. A lil more info and it iwll probably get you some good advice.

sorry for not being more specific, just not sure about any of it, guessing any type of bass or hybrids, anything that is safe to eat.

I would use a Texas-rigged plastic worm. I use the spot-remover. Its perfect, and you can get them at wal-mart. I would then buy a packet or three of blue fleck power worms. 7 or 10 inch are good. Throw it out, twitch every 5-10 seconds. Always keep the line taut. Good luck to you man. welcome

I would start with bluegill.
Small hook with a piece of lunch meat..very small under a bobber no more than 5' in front of you. Fun times and great for kids also! Good luck

Totally agree! Sunfish fishing on ultra light tackle is a blast. Right now the Sunnies are just coming to an end to their first spawn and should be starting to group up. You can catch some nice ones fishing docks, or close to structure such as brush piles or tree lines. Use a size six hook with six pound test line on an ultra light rig. Shakespeare as a couple of very nice ones selling at Acadamey. Get a box of worms and go to town. Hope this helps out a little and good luck to you. fish

Side Note: Bluegill and the rest of the sunfish family are very good eating. thumb

Watch some You Tube and read on this forum a lot. It's fun to try out different things until you hit your grove. Texas Rig w/ 1/16 to 1/8 oz bullet sinker watermelon green worm seems to always catch a bass.

Oh and get a license if you are over 14. It's the right thing to do.

Ask local anglers what they are catching on. You can't be shy to ask question.

You were me about a year ago, so I understand getting the itch but not knowing how to scratch.

New to fishing - I was reminded last night that you can't predict what is going to be at the end of your line.

While fishing bass I hooked a 8lb blue cat. I am not a catfish angler. I got him safely back in the water, but lets just say not my most manly moment.

Learn how to handle all types of fish, especially gar and catfish. It will happen.
