91,175 Evinrude, when I use the trim button or lever the relays click but the trim motor is silent. It was acting up while on the lake but if I rev'ed the big motor it would start working. I replaced the trim motor about 4 years ago. It's aftermarket. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Start off with two new relays, they dont cost much and can go bad even though you hear them engage. Other than that I would susspect the pump motor brushes since you said it would pump after you reved the engine.

check your voltage at the relays, jump across each one to see if they are bad. reving the engine and it works tells me you got bad voltage somewhere. multimeter on the backside of the relays to see how much voltage is getting across them works too.

In my case it is never the least expensive solution. I would bet your trim motor is going out and needs the extra juice to get it going.

Thanks, I was wondering if the relays would click and also be bad. I ordered new relays and will try them and I will clean the connections inside the relay box. If the relays don't fix it I'll order a motor. The thing that threw me was it went up and down in the shop (when I got home from the lake) prior to opening the relay box and unplugging and plugging the relays and now it won't come on but they click. Thanks for the advice everyone.

Thanks for the advice everyone. When the pump motor brushes get worn the armature usually is worn too and you can have an open spot that will cause intermitant opperation. When the pump motor stops in a good spot it will work when you press the switch and when it stops in the bad spot it wont work again until you jar it just right. There are a lot of variables, the relay contacts can get carbon deposits and not work right even though the coil still closes the relay. I've ran into all these problems trouble shooting aircraft hydraulics. Luckily boats are much simpler and cheaper to fix.

Well, it seems to be the trim motor. I will have one here in a couple of days. I can't remember how I got to the back screw to remove it. Does anyone know how to r&r the trim motor without removing the outboard or the trim unit assembly?
