The only crue for this is an educated thumb and still you will get backlash. Now magnetic spool control will stop it but you give up distance. One lesson I have learned is not to overpower the reel with a hard cast. I'm old and my reels are set with no cast control or breaks I fish with shimano reels the breaks are under the left reel cover the plastic breaks are on pins push down no break pull up break. Lots of time using the reel is the best fix and don't forget to clean and lube them once in a while. One more thing after it breaks in and it gets clean again it will loosen up even more.

Take it back and get something with Shimano stamped on it.

contact Ardent. One of the few made in the USA. Should be interesting to hear how they support the reel. You may just have a lemon...I have not seen many complaints on the Ardent reels.
Glad to have taken..."the trash in the back!"

Also: Good for you for supporting US products! More of us should; myself included.

These are true statements, my XS reels are patterned after 200b curado. Ardent reel come from the factory lose with abec-5 bearings. They will spin up fast and backlash easy. For this reason they will out cast my 200bs. Two suggestions put six brake weights on. Reduce the brake weight as needed once you get used to it. Cast easy don't snap the reel and thumb as necessary!
One you build and fish with your own hand built custom rod you will fish with nothing else!
