I am contemplating buying one or the other for C/TX-rigging...is the Extreme really worth the extra $80?

To me, yes. The Champions are very, very sensitive. The Extremes are extremely sensitive and a tad lighter.

The extreme is worth the extra $. Those are two entirely different action rods. I feel like the DX744 would be the better choice. The 734C would be a little soft for carolina rigging in my opinion.

Definitely the 744 and to me the extremes are well worth the extra money. You won't regret it!

Get the DX 744C. You will love it. You can easily use it for both.

I prefer the DX745 for those applications over either of the two you mentioned. It's a lot more powerful IMHO.

I have the 745 Extreme great jig rod but you really need to check out the Extreme 784 I believe it to be a far better C-rig and TX rig rod. You will do your self a disservice if you do not check it out. The 784 has great backbone and a better tip for feel

What would you consider the upper end of the weight range you could comfortably throw with the 784? It is rated to 1 oz but can it handle a 1 oz weight plus, hook and plastics in addition?

The largest weight I use for C-rigging is 1 oz, but I will go as low as 3/16 oz depending on where I'm fishing.

Yes it can. I use the DX 784 as my c-rig rod with a 1 oz. weight everytime I'm on the water. It handles it very nicely. It's a very versitile rod. As soon as I can I'm buying 2 more. One for flutter spoons and another for football jigs.
