Braid would be better if you're using a baitcaster. Otherwise for spinning reels, can't go wrong with monofilament. Even bright yellow or red line will catch fish without a problem.

Been told that using those reel sprays for lubrication actually weakens the line, makes it brittle.

I had it break... I like to use 17 lb. trilene mono...I can still cast it far enough... and doesn't break...

I had a big bass short strike me with 20 lb. fluro and the line broke.. no more...

I do love Powerpro braid... however, don't like it fishing flukes- or topwater... fishes good with spinnerbaits, worms and frogs...

Fishing senkos and flukes I usually use my spinning reel... and dropshot fishing...

I like braid as much as anyone, but I've had really good luck with the Berkley 100% Flourocarbon in 17 lb. I slobber all over the knot and pull it down really slowly when tying. I use a Palomar and haven't had any trouble at all with it breaking.

I got hung up under a dock Saturday and thought I was going to strip out my reel trying to break it.

Yes. You need to wet the line before you tighten down on the knot.

+1

I used several different brands of flouro, even Seaguar Invizx. Can't beat the Seaguar Red Label. It's cheaper than Invizx, but seems to be stronger. I had a LOT of breaking issues, but since I've switched to Seaguar Red Label, I have not had any issues. And, as previously mentioned, make sure to moisten your knots as you are tying them.

Actually braid on spinning reels is awesome. You don't get the line twist with the braid you do with monofilaments. Not only that but you can still use a higher pound test and still have a very small diameter line. Give it a try.

I'm not sure why there is always posts on here about flouro breaking. Tie a good knot and you won't have any issues.

17lb and 20lb Berkley 100% works great. However, I had similar break off problems as mentioned above with 12lb flouro.

I wet my line liberally with skoal and use a trilene knot and no problems.

If you are just learning to tie the palomar knot, you may want to make sure you are going through all the steps. Palomar knot is supposed to be one of the stronger knots.

Seagar red label 15 or 20lb florocarbon has been working perfect for me. I have been using it for almost 2 years now and i love it.

I use Flouro most of the time. I have found that if your not very careful with the knot then you can have problems. I check the knot after every fish and retie often.

On hard point blank hook sets the fluoro may fail even with a good knot-imho. Seagar seems to me to be a reliable fluoro that many guides use. Good old mono like trilene big game still works great and the price is right. If you want the line to sink or have less stretch then fluoro may be the way to go-I just like it for softer rods, deeper water applications myself.
