Howdy all, I'm new here and will start fishing the TX estuaries in a few weeks. (So, please forgive my ignorance.) I know its up to me to select what feels right for me; but, I've learned enough to listen the input of those more experienced. So, these are my first thoughts:
rod: medium/fast 7' reel: Shimano Sahara 4000 series line: 15lb mono bait: mullet/shrimp (croaker?) hooks: Gamakatsu 5/0 circle hooks/Gamakatsu wide gap worm hooks ...
I'm figuring i'll be going after Reds; but, from what i'm told, there will be no telling what will hit.
So, what do ya'll think?

That all sounds like a good start. The gear is good, but to be perfectly honest, I have caught fish on all types and levels of gear. The key with saltwater fishing to remember to rinse your gear thoroughly after each use to ensure long life. Also beware when fishing with shrimp, that could get some reds, but it also attracts a lot of other fish i.e. hardheads. But you sound like you are on the right track. All you need to do is get out there get to fishing. GOOD LUCK!

"What area are you fixin to be fish'n in ?" Are you asking about whether i'll be in a boat or not? If so, I probably will not be.

I was just speaking to a guy last night about this. He suggested I add Red Killers to my box. Even though I think it'll take me a while to get the twitch right with this rod, in the box they go....

rinse rinse and re rinse, grease, oil and go. and the coralary to that is ... grease, oil and go....rinse rinse and re rinse now i even lube my new reels before going the first time. LOL. Where did you fish before? Size of tackle sounds fine. You could drop it down to 12lb unless you're fishin the jetties. Use a 20lb flouro leader around the rocks or a 20lb mono leader everywhere else. Remember to key off of what you're reading on the water.. don't just fish a 'spot'. Look for the signs first, then fish...
