Lake Record Spot on Grapevine tonight....if, in fact, it was a spot. #7486011 05/03/12 05:00 AM

Caught a lot of spotted bass out at Grapevine, and never had any trouble differentiating between a spot and a lmb. As soon as my 6 yr old and i caught this 4 lb 12 oz fish this evening I thought it was a spot, but started second guessing myself when i got home and saw the Grapevine Lake record was only 3.45 lbs.

What do you guys think? Spot or largemouth? Thinking it's a spot because of scale pattern, small scales around eyes compared to rest of body, and corner of mouth doesn't extend past his eye....but could be wrong.

Either way it made my son's day...

k. thanks for the verdict. i was fooled, i think, by the definition in the scales around the belly - not used to seeing that on lmbs...

I guess i'm glad it's not a spot since i didn't bother getting all the proper documentation before i let it go anyway (certified scale, photo of it on golden rule, etc), so TPWD would have never recognized it anyway.

Happy face - good job on the catch.

Corner of the Mouth would be with the mouth closed. Don't matter what kind of fish it is. No reason you can't let the young man think it could have been the record spot.

Depends on what the Texas fishing rules defines a spotted bass to be. Everyone on here is correct on how to check if it is a spot. Some states are different on how they define a spot. For example, Oklahoma has alot of spots and ODWC wants as many taken out as possible so they define a spot only as a rough patch on the tongue.

It's a largemouth. But great pics. The bottom one is one for the office for sure.

Did it have a rough patch on its tongue?

Life journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved state.
But rather skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting "holy carp what a ride!"

Just an FYI, don't use the tooth patch method to determine spotted bass vs lm bass. It might apply sometimes, but not all the time.
