I was wanting to go to Lake Grapevine this thursday morning in hopes of catching some sandies. Does anyone know if they are schooling on the main lake now and if not any tips on where to find them? Thanks!

They were schooling a little bit in front of Murrell park this weekend. Try around the Island when it starts to drop off as well

No. I got my butt kicked Saturday and Sunday. I saw some boats near Murrel catching a few but nothing to brag about. I caught six fish in 2 hours on Sunday. Found a few places where they were stacking up between Murrell and the dam but I couldn't get much bite. -Fat

We actually did quite well yesterday. Took the wife and both kids out, didn't even get to the lake until 11:30. Idled around the island humps but nothing thick there so headed over to Murrell. There were 2 other boats in the area and saw them catching a few so we idled around to try and find our own little school. Finally found a few but not thick. Another boat showed up and apparently found a good school so the 4 boats moved closer together but still a couple of casts between each. A hump that topped out about 24 ft and dropped to 32 was the ticket. It was fast and furious at time but would then slow down for a bit till the school came back. I was trying to teach my kids how to fish slabs so it was slower in my boat till they got the hang of it. My kids actually jumped out of the boat and swam around the back for a while too, lol. We kept some of the larger ones (13" or so) and let all the 10"-11" ones go. We probably caught 25-30 in all but only stayed on the lake till 2:15. I could tell that some of the others were keeping the smaller ones which is fine, heard one guy say they had 26 and they were still catching so not sure how many they ended up with. Didn't see anything significant schooling on top, 1 or 2 little pods about 10 ft diameter was it.

TPWD doesn't list hybrids in the fishing info for grapevine.

We have been catching some huge sandies but not on purpose. Just follow the wind. It had all the shad stacked up in certain areas and kept cathing them on spinnerbaits while bass fishing.

I'm fishing the vine again tomorrow afternoon. The forecast says wind 9mph out of the east with a front coming through on Friday. Any recommendations? -Fat

Back in the 80's Grapevine sure had some nice hybrids (they were stocked back then). We routinely got into schools of them weighing 5-7 lbs each. But, they haven't been stocked there in years.
FYI - the shad were not just on the bank because the wind was "blowing them there", the shad spawn is the cause for that. They will get really tight to shore and you can see them flickering, even ending up on the shoreline. Bass, sandies and catfish work them over pretty good during that time too so expect a mixed bag if fishing that. You will notice that it usually takes place at 1st light then tapers off after that. That's normal shad spawn patterns. Shad have no problem swimming in rough conditions, they just follow their food source, plankton, as it is moved with the wind..hence, windy shorelines almost always have baitfish and fish.
