I have what I am sure is a much more secure design for your boat storage. However, not being a Loc R Bar owner I need your feedback about the pros and cons (mostly the cons) of the Loc R Bar. I am working on having the prototype made as soon as I hear back from my metal dude.
For myself, I never purchased one because I was not to keen on drilling holes in the fiberglass of my boat. The design I have elimates that.
Thanks

My main reason for never getting a loc-r-bar is the fact you are counting on a padlock to keep them out which is easily broken with a large wrench twisting it. The other thing is someone can take the strap from your winch and use your winch to pull it out and possibly damage the boat badly due to fiberglass getting torn out. You can shorten your strap to prevent that but if a boat parked next to you doesn't have a short strap then the strap on that trailer may be used on your boat. Its really hard to prevent someone from stealing your stuff that has enough desire to get it and time to devise a way to get through the barriers in their way.

like mine for sure, and have an added alarm lock on it. I figure if they are gonna try to winch it off, even these old ears could hear that, and im sure so could any one else in ear shot of the noise. After all, locks are for honest people, if they want it bad enough, they will figure a way. They just have to ask themselves if they feel lucky or not.

I had the same conversation with Caldemeyer a couple of days ago. His boat doesn't have one and I asked him about it. He said thieves will take a crow bar and just lift at the juncture between the boat and bar. The resulting fiberglass damage is very expensive. I never thought about the winch strap as mentioned by okbass.
Sure would be nice if everyone would just leave everybody else's stuff alone.

There is nothing I don't like about my loc-r-bar. Well, one thing - sumbeech gets damn hot in the summer...
There's been numerous discussions as to how effective the loc-r-bar is and how they can be broken, pulled out, etc... but the comments made above are amusing.
I suppose that no padlock is safe if someone a) has a big wrench, and b) is strong enough to twist it and break steel.
But why would you go through that much trouble when you can just go the next boat over from mine and steal his stuff. He doesn't have a loc-r-bar across his deck.

You cannot use the strap to pull a lock-r-bar off a boat. It is an urban myth that has been discussed many time here. If you can post a picture and documented case of this happening, I am sure the folks that manufacture them will be very interested.

Loc-R-Bar actually had and may still have a REWARD if you can provide proof that the bar can be compromised by the winch strap. I also think Bristow tried it when he had his fiberglass shop open and reported back with pictures that it cannot be done. Like was said it is an urban myth more than anything. You cannot find a picture on the internet of a boat that had this done to it either.

There's nothing I dislike about mine. Wouldn't have a boat without one.

I'm 5'9" and weigh about 160 and with either an 18 inch pipe wrench or crescent can twist any padlock made to its breaking point. Its not too hard since the loop on the end of the padlock is made of hardened steel than can't handle a bending or twisting force.

If a thief sees a boat with a loc-r-bar and one next to it without, I'm fairly confident the one with the bar will not be broken into.
It's all about time and/or effort. In the army our weapons vaults are not impervious to thieves, they must only meet certain criteria on how long it takes to get into them via different means. It's more about adding some degree of difficulty to the task of breaking into your boat and/or vault.
The only thing I don't like about mine is I have a Stratos where the fiberglass isn't straight off the deck. It curves leaving a gap on the area where the loc-r-bar mounts on the boat. Purely aesthetic.

There is many types of locks to put thru the hole not just a regular pad lock. Keep fishing. Next your going to say they can pull out their gun and shoot the lock. I don't care of you ever own one. By the time someone goes thru all this trouble it's what you make of it. But I'll let you come over with a pair of channel locks, a pipe wrench, and a crow bar and try to get in mine. I'll give you 5 minutes of a head start. I promise.

I take my rods out of boat and leave compartments unlocked, don't want some idiot trying to break into my boat. Those bars are ok but not for me.
