Heck I've been using baitcast reels for 40 years and I still backlash occasionally. Sometimes that bad when I loose my concentration or throw a light bait into the wind. You just learn to deal with it and get your knife out.

Like me for what I am, or don't like me at all.

Usually my worst backlashes happen when something unusual happen during the cast.

I won't spend more than a few minutes on a backlash. Its easier to just cut the line out and put new line on the reel. With braid it might be worth it to spend a little more time since the line is so much more expensive but I don't remember ever doing that to braid.

I have a story to illustrate a bad backlash. During one of the BASS Megabucks back in the last of the last century, I was standing around the back of one of the guys boats while they were getting ready for the next day. David Dudley came out with a little surprised look all of a sudden and reached down in the bottom of his boat and picked up a tiny dead bird.
He said that explained why he had a bad backlash during the day. He did not know how that happened but he must have hit a bird during the cast without noticing it.

We feel your pain! Even riding the spool with your thumb it can still happen.

That's not a backlash, it's a baitastrophy!

You fish, you backlash. Got a nice one yesterday throwing a small crankbait in the wind, cut it off, respooled when I got home.
