Hey guys. New to the forum and freshwater fishing. I am restarting to fish after a few years without any fishing activity. I have fished in saltwater in Peru, so no idea about how to catch species here. The deal is that I want to introduce my kid to fishing. He is not even 3, but interested somewhat. I want to take him to a place salt/freshwater where he can get some biting activity to peek his interest. I don't really care about fish types and sizes, as long as he is happy and enjoying it, he actually does great working the reel! Any parks or stock ponds where I can bring him and hours don't go by without a bite?
Thanks a lot.

Check this out: Neighborhood Fishin' Program They are stocking catfish tomorrow at the two Houston ponds in the program (Mary Jo Peckham and Tom Bass 1). Then, they stock every two weeks after that. I took my Cub Scout Den to Tom Bass 1 two Sundays ago and the boys had bites every time they dropped their lines in. We didn't catch a whole lot - bait kept getting stolen - but they had fun. I haven't been after a stocking but plan to go over tomorrow and check it out. Should be some good fishin'. Just hope it's not super crowded.

Thanks so much for the info. It will be a little complicated for this weekend, but in 2 weeks might work. Maybe I'll be able to sneak out on saturday afternoon. how do you rig for that kind of fishing?

I don't think you HAVE to be there on stocking day. When we went a couple of weeks ago, it was well after the trout stocking and before any catfish stocking for the year and we still got bites left and right.
I keep it simple for the kids - just a bobber, little split shot weight, hook and worm. That was working great the other day.
Actually, truth be told, I'm keeping it simple for myself as well. I'm just getting back into fishing and have a lot to learn!

Follow up...Definitely DON'T go on stocking day. We fished for 3 hours and got 0 catfish on Friday (the day they stocked). Noticed a couple of posts in the Catfish section here that said the same (they don't bite much the first day). Knew I should have listened but was too excited to wait. Actually, it wasn't a total bust. My friend came with his kids and his son actually did catch a catfish right before we left for the evening.
Another positive: my little girl (4) caught her first fish that day (a little bluegill) and was thrilled. She proceeded to catch four more after that!
Went back yesterday (Saturday) and my son caught a beautiful catfish on his first cast. I didn't measure but I would say about 14 - 16 inches. No more after that, though. We only stayed another 45 minutes or so and he was so thrilled to have caught the one that all was good. (It was his first catfish)
May hit it again today...we'll see.
Anyway - I'm really glad we found out about this pond. Looking forward to many more fishing trips with the kids!
