Academy H20 Mettle is a very good reel and the price is hard to beat. With that price you can spend more money on a quality rod.

What type of rod/reel do you fish with now? also what sort of lures will you be throwing on your baitcaster? For an all around setup I would go with either the $99 lews reel or a Revo S bot with 15lb Invisx

Pinnacle Matrix XLT. 6.2:1 gear ratio, 7.9oz., and 10 bearings. Easy for a beginner to set up with the dual braking system. Less tiring to use all day because of the light weight. $99.00 and sometimes cheaper at Tackle warehouse.

Quantum makes some really good entry level baitcaster combos - good quality and very good prices. Line wise. . .generally 14lb mono will work for everything but fishing dense cover. For that you need slightly heavier.

My first baitcaster was a curado and I bought it 13 years ago and I still use it today, it easy to cast and hold up to everything. I just wish we could still get them at the same price from 13 years ago, and it's on the same berkley lightning rod that I bought with the reel.

Go with quality mono. I like sufix. Flouro has too much memory for a beginner and expensive to replace. Braid can give you some nasty birds nests. It'll last longer and has no memory though

I also second the choice of a reel with two breaking systems.

I have a cheap Shakespeare Synergy baitcaster, my only one, and I'm happy with it, I think 29.99$ at Academy.

I like my hank parker Abu garcia I picked up at wally world for $99. Nice quality, and has a flipping switch. Definitely go with big game mono.
