This reminds me of the old fish attractors you would build yourself and put in a mason jar, then hang it over the side of the boat. It just made a clicking noise. I remember seeing a schematic for it in some fishing magazines and a few old books at the library. I just googled one up on this page. http://www.kenneke.com/kits3.html scroll down a little.

I'm not so sure it's all hype. I've heard sound bytes on the internet comparing a rattle trap to a school of shad. The trap sounds identical to the school of shad and we all know the success of a rat-l-trap. I don't see why this wouldn't work. I did read where Ralph Manns has been testing one and he said to keep the volume down to 2-3 so it wasn't so loud it was overwhelming. It's hard to say it doesn't or won't work....after all, you don't catch a fish each and every time you cast a rat-l-trap. You can catch tons of fish in a day, but you'll never catch one on each cast. Same applies here. It may put more fish in the boat over the course of a day, but you have to have realistic expectations. If they ever come up with something that will guarantee a fish on every cast, I'll sell my rods and give up fishing! I also like the idea it may be useful at masking sounds like a trolling motor or the ping from your fish finder. By putting out sounds that are normal to a fish, you may be able to mask the sounds that are out of the ordinary. Will I spend $400 for one? No way! KD

That price tag does kind of kill the urge. I guess if your a pro and depend on it to make your living it would be good insurance. The way it was explained by the manufacturer on the radio show I listened to, is it doesn't call the fish, but gets their attention. It just puts them more on alert. The bass may not be hungry but the fact that there is the sound of feeding around them the bass will be alerted to the presents of shad and feeding activity and react to it as the predator fish they are. If an offering presents itself they just might be enticed enough to strike. The same way the rattletrap works, but at a much larger scale.
Just one more cast!

I'm gonna get me one of them fish attractor thingys, some helicopter lures and some banjo minnows.
Already got one of them "pocket-fishermen"...so I think I'll be set once I get the other stuff.
Can't wait to fill the boat.

When I was a kid I wanted one of those "pocket-fisherman" so bad I drove my family nuts. Didn't matter that we already had a boatload of fishing poles. My older brother finally bought me one for my birthday and I wore that thing out in 2 months on bullhead and bream in a local pond.

I read about this thing when it was introduced at the ICAST Show. I haven't given it much thought, though. It seems plausible that the sounds might turn some fish "on" to feed, but I figured that tournaments would outlaw it pretty quickly if it was really that effective.
KVD's endorsement of it isn't something that is gonna make me run right out and buy it. Plus, if tournaments do outlaw it's use... Man that'll be a hole in your pocket.
