After fishing Gibbons Creek for a couple of years (I live in College Station), I finally made my first trip to Bastrop on Sunday. Why oh why have I been wasting so much time on Gibbons Creek?! I got on the water at 8:00 a.m. and had a dozen bass by 10:30. Primarily fished Cedar Cove with T and Shaky-head rigged rattlesnakes, although I did catch one fish on a fluke. No fish larger than about 2.5 lbs, but a ton of fun and a very refreshing trip after several unproductive trips to Gibbons this spring. Bass fishing on lakes that actually contain bass...what a concept! smile

make sure to hit up Fayette County too, and the trip to Conroe is worth it as well from time to time.

I'm definitely going to hit Fayette County. I read mixed things about Conroe. Is there an area of Conroe in which a newbie should focus?

Yeah, Conroe can be hit or miss...but it's a big hit when it's on, especially as far as size vs. how close it is to College Station.

It's probably your best "big bass" lake close to College Station.

Brushpiles in the southern half (below 1097 bridge), and creek channels in the northern section.

In winter with normal water levels, you can always catch some bass on the South End up Atkins (Del Lago located on this), Lewis (shorter 1097 bridge) or Little Lake (Bentwater) on traps and squarebills fished around docks.

Fishing any lake is going to be hit and miss. I never have any luck on Gibbons but know people that do. For me, Bastrop has not been producing like it was before the drought. We have fished Fayette a lot recently. If you read reports, you will see there have been huge amounts of LMB caught recently. I live 30 minutes from Conroe and I hardly ever fish there. Ten months out of the year you will be run over by "Wake Setters" and ski-fleas.

Every once in awhile I suggest you try out a new lake. Then you'll have options for dealing with different seasons, wind direction, and fishing patterns.

Be safe,

I definitely want to try Fayette soon. Some of the reports are pretty amazing.

Colonel: Sounds like you're spending more and more time on Bastrop and less and less on Gibbons.

We take our RV to Bastrop and my wife really loves it there. She gets a weekend away from home and I catch a bunch a fish. We did all of Spring Break there and have about three other trips thru about mid June when it gets too hot to take the RV. The fish are not big at Bastrop but I usually catch a bunch so I dont complain. Gibbons is only 18 miles from the house so I still spend the vast majority of my fishing days there even if the fishing is slow compared with the past.

I've been catching 5-7 fish a trip (usually dusk) bank fishing on top waters in Conroe recently. I caught 7 today with a 5 pounder and another 3# that jumped off. The rest were about a pound, but a blast on top waters.

I can't wait to get on bastrop with an Alabama rig in the schoolies though...

No need for Gibbons mud hole when you have Fayette and Bastrop in your back door those lakes are awesome! Next time your at Bastrop use a POP-R on any point next to the grass early morning and hang on lots of fun.

Ditto Grant2. Fished Bastrop last week and my partner and I caught 50+. Most we very shallow and yes caught some on Alabama Rig. The schoolies usually start up mid May and are smaller than Fayette but are more consistant and usually school pretty good until Oct. Neat little lake and very easy to get out of the wind unlike Fayette and Conroe

Used to fish Gibbons some. Don't like the "late" opening of the gates. One of the last times I went to Gibbons I got skunked. The next week I went to Fayette and caught a nice 3#'r on my first cast. Been going to Fayette regularly ever since.
