I recently came across a fly rod my dad was given by my grandaddy back in the sixties. It's a 8 1/2 foot Wright McGill 8A. It looks to be a mass produced bamboo rod.
It's in pretty bad shape, but I'd like to get it restored. It's probably going to cost me a heck of a lot more money than the rod is worth, but I think it would just be something cool to hang on to.
Any suggestions on people good at rod restorations? Thanks!!

This site has quite a few rods builders that I'm sure are more than good for the job, haven't used any so can't recommend. But I found my gramps old south bend bamboo rod and it is crazy fun to me to catch fish on the same rod that 3 generations of my family have used. I think it's work all the money it would take just to use the same rod your dad/grand dad used and pull in a fish

I'd suggest checking with pearow here on TFF. He'll know who to go to if he's not available. Have not seen splitcanerod in a while. He's good too.

http://classicflyrodforum.comIf you are describing the rod accurately it may be W & M Granger. These are highly desirable, and when in decent shape worth pretty good money. They are also very nice rods and a lot of fun to fish. I have one that I really love. The guys on the classicflyrod forum can answer your questions and many of them are accomplished bamboo makers and restorers.... Good luck

I second Bud's recommendation-also a guy named Art Parramore does good work. Bud has a rod he reworked.

With bamboo, it's all about the condition, and if it was poorly cared for, the condition can be suspect. I have had great luck purchasing refurbished rods on eBay from a couple of reputable builder/restorers, either of whom could give you a quick appraisal of your rod and let you know whether it is worth restoring and how much it might cost to do so.
They are Dave Cottengim (lublgrud on eBay) from North Carolina and Earl Taylor (sierragv) from Idaho. If that's not enough info to contact them, let me know and I'll get you more contact info.
