I currently have a 1998 aluminum ProKraft 15.5' Bass America bass boat with a 40 hp Mercury. It's a fun little boat, but it is very small and has zero storage space. I would like to upgrade to a fiberglass boat. I'm interested in a boat that will fit in my relatively small garage, really like the fit and layout of Rangers, but probably don't have the cash for a brand new Z117 or Z118. I have found several late model Ranger 177 TR's for sale. I like the layout and the retro looks is pretty nice, but it is definitely a unique looking boat. Does anyone own one of these or have fished out of them? I would like to hear what people who have experience with the boat thinks about them. Thanks bug-e

I would look at a champ 171 as you can get a 135hp. Only because I have one for that very same space issue.

The champ's are all older, correct? Did Stratos buy Champion? If they did, then it's hard to find a stratos 176 that is not underpowered. Looks like they were mainly sold with 50 and 60 hp engines although there are some 176's out there with 70's and 90's. I can't imagine that boat with a 50 hp motor, but used 176's with 50 and 60 hp motors are all over the internet.

I looked at those to and just could not see a 50hp doing the job. It is tough to find a 17 with enough power. I really like the small 6 cylinder as compared to a 4 cylinder. I was looking at newer 17' boats, but decided against that as why put 18K toward a boat that most folks do not want. It is hard to sell a 17' to anyone, but those of us who have a space requirement. That is why I got an older in very good shape 17' with enough motor. If when I upgrade I loose a couple of grand. If I had gotten a much newer boat I would be out about 8K minimum.

My dad had a champ and was really unhappy with it. Very under powered. My 177TR gets on plane fast ant can do 45mph. You won't be fastest on water but you can reach way up creeks bigger boats can't. Ranger puts a lot of thought in this boat very dry ride. Break away tounge really helps on tight storage. I heep it and a full size Chevy Tahoe side by side in my 2 1/2 car garage.

Hard to blame the boat for poor setup, champs are great boats. All boats generally are more enjoyable if they have enough ponies.

I would also consider the Ranger 188VX or VS as well. They made them from 2006-2011. They fish great and are very comfortable. IMO you won't find a better under 19' boat. I just bought a new Z118 and pick it up tomorrow-can't wait. Where I bought it from had a new close out 2011 188VX that was sweet!
