In any competition where there's money/prizes involved, expect cheaters.

I have some family up in Oregon that have a One Fly Tournament for trout... they have a non boater measuring the fish. The catch is it's literally one fly, once you loose it your done! I don't think that would go over well in a bass tournament.

Actually, it's been done in a bass tourney before. Honey Hole Magazine had a "one lure" tourney like this about 10 years or so ago. If you lost the lure you were given to start the tourney, you were....SOL. Plus, the old tournament series "Specialty Bass", run by Tommy Miller, started out at Lake Palestine back in the early 1980's with a Whopper Stopper tourney where they provided you with a select few Whopper Stopper lures that were the only ones you could throw the entire tourney. I think BassChamps has even had a Berkeley lures only tourney too.

Great idea.

But JT Larkin and I put together a swimbaits only tournament at the end of March. Not a big money deal but a bragging rights. We had Stompy's place rented for people who needed a place to stay, fixed breakfast tacos, I smoked some pig, we had cold beer for the contestants, had lots of people express interest, was going to be a good time.

One person besides myself and JT showed.

So if it's not the normal tournament where all these wanna be pros in their scare shirts can act like the second coming, you probably won't get any serious interest.

Just sayin....

I have done some One Fly trout tourneys. Donated prizes were picked by the order of finish.

Would be fun for bass as well.

I've seen that happen before too! Lots of talk and excitement but when the time comes, you never really know who will show. I think you throw it out there and give it a try.

I didn't know about this event. Somehow I missed the announcement. That would have been fun.
I like the idea of a one "type" bait tournament. Like if someone chooses a spinnerbait, he can only throw a spinnerbait but in any color or size he wants. If he can only throw a white 1/2 oz spinner bait with double gold willow leaf blades, that is getting too specific. Same with a crank bait, any size or color, soft plastics, any size and color, etc.

Or you could do technique specific of their choice per individual. Each would choose to Drop shot, or C-rig, or Tx. rig, or fish a jig, or crank, etc, and you just use that technique all during the tournament.

I think the sad part of this post is how many guys say that they didn't know if you could trust everyone to follow the rules. Is this what the world is coming to, that for a measly few dollars or a trophy a man would give up his integery. Thats sad, to know the people you sit and talk to can not be trusted.--Smitty

Sad but people will cheat, even if it's just for bragging rights and a plaque.

And I know a former long time tourney director who once told me that he wished he had a dollar for everytime an angler called him on the phone for tourney info and then said, "We'll see you in the morning." and they never showed up.
