only time i've been fishing for hybrid/stripers is while trolling for them in about 25 ft of water. the other day at ft phantom i noticed lots of guys fishing from the shore with surf style rods in the ground. i'm sure some where going for cats. so i was just curious what you guys are using or if you could point me in the right direction of some gear to get. thanks in advance

If you're fishing for hybrids/stripers, I would only fish wind blown banks from the shore during sunset or sunrise only for better action, you need to get the bait out as far as possible that is why surf rods and heavy sinkers (at least 3oz in my opinion) are more recommended.
You can pretty much use anything to catch them, shad, ghost minnows, or crawfish for the hybrids. That is what I have luck with fishing the banks. Try to fish deeper areas and areas with stumps and drop offs.

I've noticed a few folks shoreline fishing for hybrids and stripers. My experiance is with hybrids, on Lake Somerville. 1. Peeled crawfish tails work great. (Best times for success, is early morning, February through April.) 2. Fish points, creek channels, areas where white bass are known to run close to the shoreline. 3. Live shad are best, heavy sinker on the bottom. 4. Late winter, about all you will catch this way is catfish, or hybrids. Early spring, you should be catching some white bass as well, or you are not in a good spot. Location is EVERYTHING.

I think most everyone fishes too deep (over throwing the fish) in the Spring Time.
The Shad come right up to the bank in the morning and pretty much stay there on the wind blown shores thru the mornings.
So that is where the fish are (1 to 4 feet of water - 1 to 15 feet from the bank) - March thru April.
If I was fishing from shore - I would be right down the bank line - not out into the lake (Blue Cats, Hybrids, White Bass & Bass - and we know Crappie are shallow too).
Us Guys in boats - we're thowing at the bank 5 feet from shore.
Don't over throw the fish from shore (If that is not working - 1st move and/or start working out into the lake),
No Special Rod and Reels required,

I agree, us boat guys are chunkin at the banks so Why couldn't bank guys do the same! Early mornings and evenings, I suggest something that looks like a shad! Rattle trap, or something of that sort.
I thing those surf rod guys are going for cats. I would keep you're bait moving, and if ya catch one there should be more!
Good fishin Mike
