Hello all, last weekend u bought a boat at a garage sale ...project boat. I bought a late 50's "Thompson" wood boat.My favor I am needing is someone to come by my house and take a look at the engine. It is a late 50's to early 60's model "volvo penta" in/out board. I.have no clue if it is worth trying to...overhaul/rebuild. If you could that would be awesome. I get home around 4 pm mon.-fri. and live near the I35 split.

The motor has been during for a few years. I talked to a buddy of mine a couple days ago and asked about winterized or not... I have no idea.

No, I have done nothing to it... No oil in it I believe. I tried hooking an OLD batterie to it, but the connection was not a good one. I was just gonna see if I could get lights to come on or something.

That looks like the GM (Chevy) iron duke, should be lots of parts available. b
If I'm not fishing or hunting I'm hunting a place to fish or hunt.

Personally I would junk it and find something you can replace it with. Now if ya want an all original, then spend the money. I had a 66 Tempest tri-hull with one of those in it. It looks like it may have dual Stomberg side draft carbs. on it. I found rebuild kits for mine at $30 a carb. Just a few o-rings, but they needed them ( foreign auto parts had them ) That little water pump there in the front. $320 rebuilt. ( from a volvo dealer ) I had a overheating problem with mine and had to do some " customizing " to keep it from over heating. I think I spent close to $900 on getting it running ( that included a new exhaust manifold ) and I only paid $300 for the whole boat. I ended up selling it to a guy for $700 just to get rid of it. So if your a pretty good mechanic, and can do a lot of the work yourself, go for it.

Unless you are trying to restore the boat, I would gut the engine/drive train and retrofit a 4 cylinder mercrusier in it. You would come out waaaaaaaaaay cheeper in the long run.
