They are usually cruisin the shallows. Typically if you see one cruising shallow they will eat most anything. And try to break your gear.

These things sound tough, I look forwards to hooking into a good one.

Very True. They tend to be territorial also. They will sneak up and hold on a particular spot along the bank. The might spook off, but will usually come back in 1-5 minutes to the exact same spot. Almost like a bass on a bed. We used to do that alot on the creek. On the flats, you could walk along the bank making a lot of racket until you see one spook off. Then I would sit down and let out just enough line to doodle sock the cut bait up and down right where the fish was sitting. Usually in aminute or so they would be right back and nail the bait. Let 'em swim off a little and set down on 'em. hooked

Set the hook first, ask questions later!!!

Not sure where your located but if it is only bowfin your looking for on the trip Palestine has them everywhere in highsaw/ ledbedder right on the bank, thrashing all day everyday. Back in Flat creek too, way in the back. Ive had a few go after top water frogs and a couple flukes. The people who have been targeting them have done well in those places, but if your looking to mix it up with LMB on the same trip, Fork would be my choice too

I hate those things, I caught a giant during the McDonald's tournament. I was already picturing that new legend in my garage until that sucker came up. Plus he destroyed my bait.

Be aware that if hauled into the boat to get your bait back they have a reputation for crapping in the boat.

I am in DFW area so my choices are hubbard or fork but I figured I would rather go to fork b/c I might try to catch a few bass in the morning before starting up my bowfin plan which will involve several rods and equal number of beers.

Here is a pic of one with those "Lime Green Fins" mentioned above...Caught this one on a 10in Tx Rig berkley power worm in the spring on fork-Prolly bout 3lbs but felt like a 8lb bass... Was spawning off a laydown log.

Simon Peter said to them "I am going fishing" They said "We are going fishing also."

I use to catch a ton of them in North Carolina in the brackish tidal rivers up there, they would always hit a white spinner bait and usually destroy it. Couldn't ever see a good use for them as they aren't fit to eat and do major destruction to the bass fry so I would usually kill them and throw them back in.

When I started bass fishing I started trying to catch bowfin very similar styles. Bowfin will adapt to the conditions. Ive caught them on top water frogs to crankbaits. I will say they are murder on crankbaits .both hooks and actual cranks! Bowfin are what got me on braid..so I thank them for that! grin

Last week on LOP I hauled in this bowfin using a carolina rigged Zoom 9.5" ribbontail color: red shad. I was working the shallows in about 2.5' of water. Thought I had hooked into a 5-7lbs LMB.

Notice, he only had one eye.

when they blow up on a frog it sounds like someone dropped a bowling ball in the water....
