So is it normal to have to rebait your hook every 1-2 minutes when bluegill fishing?
I've tried some of the tips you guys gave me in the last thread I started, but I'm still getting cleaned all the time.

Every 15-30 seconds if they're biting

Every 15-30 seconds if they're biting +1 I take my boy when the gills are on because they ambush his bait as soon it hits the water. They'll hit it like a school of pirahnas.

Ok. Well that's good to know. I thought I might be baiting the hook incorrectly.
I know this is kinda of a dumb, subjective question, but about what percentage of the time do you reel in empty? For every 3 casts I make, I hook a fish once. For every five fish I hook, four of them get away. I was fishing for about two hours today, and every time I cast out the fish would bite within 5-10 seconds. I only caught three.

It happened to us too. You need smaller hooks. I went to Academy and bought a panfish hook package and it solved the problem. The folks in the 'Bluegill/Sunfish' section will know the right size to use.

Smaller baits will help too. Ifyou have worm hanging off the hook, they will peck at that, and not get hooked.

Seems like I saw a post from TarponFly and he was using fried bacon fat and it stayed on his hook after catching several gills.

Small fish steal your bait. Get real small hooks, just bait the tip. I would change fishing spot to find bigger fish.

#6 hooks, let them eat it for just a second or two, and lift your pole straight up, not back towards you or too the side. Went today and caught 6 in about 5 minutes, and the smallest was no more then 5 inches long.

I use #10 hooks and a tiny piece of worm or tiny piece of hot dog. If they are small enough, still may only hook up one in three, especially the hot dog, as it comes off easily. What others have said, too much bait and they will just peck it to death. Good luck.
