 G loomis SJR6400 IMX hook up problem

I got to fish with a SJR6400 today for crappie I was using Sahara 750fb with 10 lb fireline. The problem was every time I tried to set the hook I would miss them or pull the hook out of their mouth. I use this reel on my St. Croix with no problem. The rod handled a 2.5 lber catfish fine and a small bass. Anyone else had a similar problem or was this just me?
