Even if this fish is a 2nd generation hybrid (a hybridized hybrid if you will), it still would be categorized as a hybrid by TPWD. The definition of striped bass in the regulation includes "all hybrids and subspecies". I've seen enough long toothpatches to know the difference

Hybrid. The tooth patch is elongated and you can see the split down the middle of the patch. On a sandbass that patch is NOT elongated - more of a blunt, rounded triangle in shape.
The body shape of that hybrid is the same dimensions more or less as the smaller sandbass next to it. A truly big sandbass will be much 'taller' or deeper in its build. As an anology, a big sandbass will have a build closer to a black drum, where a big hybrid will have a build closer to a redfish.
The external thing that I spot on big sandbass (or small hybrids) is the eye. The eyes of a sandbass are somewhat bigger proportionally to its body size than those of a hybrid. Zeek description is spot on. If BPS in GV still has those monster Sandies in the tank, take a look. They almost have a humpback appearance. One thing though, If the patch (circled) is from the fish in question, wouldn't a 22 inch Hybrid have a bigger mouth?

One good thing is that it is a legal catch either way

Hey doug this is antohny tommy and richies friend.. Man the whites have been doing good behind the spillway andi have also been catchting nice hybrids too I've heard the reports for the last 2 wks. I'll be out there Tom. Lake has been doing well. But want to check it out behind the spillway. Next question friends have been debating...did you catch it in the spillway or the lake? Hhmmmm.... Would that still be a lake record or............?

got this from tpwd
If you have photos of the fish, send them to anglers@tpwd.state.tx.us > > Or, you could go ahead and fill out the attached record application and > send it in with the photos. If we can't identify the species from the > photos, we may need to send a sample to our genetics lab.

Well he took it to the biologist doug posted on here and he tested it and it is a hybrid..I feel bad for my cousin cause he was honestly excited and so was i..Oh well.Doug did bring up a good question though,This fish was caught at the spillway and just what if it was a whitebass and a record, would that be a lake record, spillway reocrd or a river record?

White bass: Stripes faint, only one extends to tail, one tooth patch, body deep, more than 1/3 length
Hybrid: Stripes distinct, usually broken, several extend to tail, two tooth patches, body deep, more than 1/3 length
Striper: Stripes distinct, several extend to tail, two distinct tooth patches, body slender, less than 1/3 length
This one has one tooth patch (white bass), but also has stripes istinct, several extend to tail (hybrid), not broken (striper), body slender, less than 1/3 length (striper).
It is a White-Hybrid-Sriper bass. My thoughts exactly, It's a mutt... maybe it's a new record for a W-H-S mutt?

The optimist in me was hoping for a Sandie but the realist was saying hybrid - however,it's the "closest Hybrid to a Sandie" I've seen. Were they able to say anything about the genetics other than "hybrid"?

If anyone thinks it is a sandbass I'll take all bets and give 5 to 1 odds.
