I typically try to night fish with submerged fishing lights because the bugs swarm me even when I turn the lantern on. I love the setup with the LED's mounted like that, but worry the bugs will be too much to leave them on for a long period of time. Do you guys have that same experience with the lights mounted above the waterline like that?

I too have been thinking about a submerged LED setup.. I have over 800 120watt LED lights in a custom fixture over my salt water reef tank at home and Im sold on the technology.. With a hot summer coming I've been thinking about honing my night fishing skills which are pretty non-existant at this point. Have you guys ever had luck catching white/hybrid/or stripers at night? Anyone feel comfy talking about some fundamental techniques of night fishing? I have no problem and have the electronics to find the fish more often than not during the day.. Is it the same concept at night locating them?

If you ever make it out to Bridgeport for night fishing, head over to the bridge and anchor/tie up underneath. There is a channel that runs through one of the pillars where you will catch sand bass and hybrids. Drop down with minnows or shad. I've always found that the bite turns on around 11pm, but could be the time of year I fish there.

My family is from bridgeport and paradise but I've haven't had the pleasure of fishing it yet cause EM is so close to me.. I have plans to get on bridgeport soon.. Was going to be this weekend but the weather is going to suck so I'm just gonna take my chances at EM saturday morning. Roger that on live bait at night.. What about lights?

I have caught many more whites at night than in the day. You fish the same areas you would in the day time. We typcially fish an hour before dark putting around the normal points, humps, drop offs and etc... between 20-40 feet (Lake Ivie the usual haunt) and most time 30-40ish feet. When we find good concentrations of fish on the finder we mark them with a bouy because it is easier for us to anchor up with the physical marker than by GPS. We like to have 2 or 3 markers out in case the first one or two do not produce.

1. locate fish
2. anchor as near as possible (long rope helps keep the anchor out of the fish)
3. turn on lights
4. lower bait to the depth you see fish on finder
5. be patient the sun needs to be down 30-60 minutes before making a call on the first spot

To me finding them is the same as day fishing only the fish stay with you once you have them in the lights. We allways start with minnows and switch to shad as soon as we can net them in the lights. Shad 2 inch and longer out perform minnows exponentially. Tip: turn your lights off right before the net hits the water and you will catch more shad. For some reason they seem to come towards the surface when the lights go out. A net with fine mesh will produce hundreds if not thousands of tiny shad. Bites are usually subtle especially with minnows, think winter crappie here. We have talked about jigs many times and never tried them because we are competitive and dont want the other guys catching a bunch a fish while we try something new. Silly I know.

We night fish exclusively in the heat of the summer because my grandfather does not handle the heat well and we are better at nightfishing than dayfishing when its hot. Bright moons make a huge reduction in the bite. Not because the fish care what phase the moon is in, but because the moonlight minimizes the intensity of your artificial light and the bait does not ball up in your light as well. Dark night right location and the shad are likely to be so thick your finder wont read the bottom any longer. We like submersable lights because we feel there is better light penetration deeper without the refractive properties of the surface reducing the light. We keep one light on for baiting, removing fish, drinking beer, and etc... We have very little problems with bugs unless near the bank, but I would think west texas has a smaller bug population than you eastern fellas with all your rain.

We fished Lake Graham some when my grandfather lived there and the lake has hybrids. We would occasionally catch some, but they did not seem to hang in the lights like whites will. You might catch a couple or four then nothing for an hour and half while catching whites and then some more and many nights without any hybrids. It could be just we did not know what we were doing for the hybrids.

sorry it got long hope it helps and the green lights are sweet and I bet that works great. I fished with brandonA once and he uses them to chum up shad to net before the sun comes to catch stripers on buchanon

We started off with a guide at night. mr. whiskers on Lake Ivie, good guy

Can someone explain how the Feds count recreational Red Snapper catch?

I've grown up fishing at that lake, right there under the bridge. Grew up in the Springtown area, so Paradise was always right down the road.

As far as lights go, for now, I use just basic Brinkman submersible lights you can buy at Academy (and Wal-Mart, I believe).

I do plan to mount LED's on the boat before too long, that way I can light up the water at the flick of the switch. That is why this thread got my attention, because mounting the lights around the gunwale light like Atta has done is certainly the most cost effective way to mount them, as opposed to mounting submersible LED's to the transom.

Thank you oldtrackster.. VERY good read and informative.. I def will be throwing my hat into some night fishing soon..

Michael, I went to weatherford so I'm sure we know some same areas.. My dad was born in bridgeport in 1942 and my grandma born in paradise in the 20's. My wife also from paradise and her who family is all over that area. They go on and on about the fishing at bridgeport and I'm ready to get it on.. you talking about the 380 bridge? pretty sure i could find that channel with me electronics..

Also.. I've NEVER been crappie fishing.. hard to believe i'm sure, but I also have summer plans of cutting my teeth on em out at bridgeport.. sure is a lot cheaper than running all over cedar creek which is where i went last weekend lol
